About

I Stay Automatic, continued Money Add Then Multiply, refers to a viral 2013 vine video in which the person filming is singing a song about maths while his friend is trying to make a hoop in basketball. The video went viral shortly after appearing on Vine, inspiring numerous reactions, tributes and remixes on YouTube. The video began going viral after its initial release in May of 2021.

Origin

On October 24th, 2013, Vine user @semi uploaded a video to Vine titled, "Another 6-sec rap," singing the song while his friend trying to make a shot in basketball. The vine had 3.1 million loops before Vine was shut down in 2016. The video was re-uploaded to YouTube [1] on December 5th 2013, garnering 25.1 million views in a comparable span of time (shown below).

I'm Semi I stay automatic / Money add then multiply I call that mathemathematics.

Spread

The "I stay automatic" Vine became a point of fascination for internet users in the years since its release. In 2014, Vice[4] interviewed Semi, who explained the extra syllable he added in "mathematics" was an accident. However, some have interpreted the lyric as a complex work of genius. One YouTube commented the lyric may mean:

“(M)oney (A)dd (TH)en (Multiply), I call that MATHM-Mathematics.”

In the latter half of the 2010s, the video began appearing in numerous remixes and Vine compilations. On January 12th, 2019, YouTuber[2] Jamzy remixed the video with the Gabbie Hanna "What If I'm the Monster" meme. The video hit 424,000 views in two years (shown below, left). On March 10th, 2019, YouTuber[3] CuBox posted a looped remix of the song. The video hit 2.9 million views in 2 years (shown below, right).
