About

Shark Pog refers to a series of viral videos and memes featuring a shark with its mouth open, resembling poggers Twitch emotes, accompanied by a low-quality voice recording that says, "shark pog." The original video features the Animoji character Bruce the Shark performing the act. Another popular variant uses footage of an actual shark, accompanied by the same low-quality voice recording.

Origin

Around June 19th, 2020, Twitter user Shark Pog uploaded a low-resolution Animoji video featuring Bruce the Shark saying, "shark pog" and striking a pog face. Shark Pog's account was deleted sometime in September, losing the original upload. However, a September 22nd reupload on a new Shark Pog Twitter page[1] (operated by a different user) received over 19.5 thousand views and 2,000 likes in three days (shown below).

On June 19th, Shark Pog was uploaded to YouTube by sluds[2], a friend of the user who ran the now deleted Shark Pog Twitter page. Shortly after uploading the original Shark Pog, sluds uploaded a 1080p remaster, featuring higher quality video and audio (shown below). The original video received over 335 thousand views in three months, with the remaster receiving over 446 thousand views.

Spread

On August 15th, 2020, content creator skinned_furby[3] uploaded their own version of Shark Pog to their Instagram page and YouTube channel. This video uses footage from an upload titled "Basking shark"[4] featuring a shark swimming with its mouth wide open. On the same day, skinned_furby submitted the video to Instagram user poggerfish[5] who reuploaded it to their page. The YouTube upload received over 153 thousand views in 41 days (shown below). On August 16th, Loudequalsfunny reuploaded skinned_furby's video to their YouTube page, garnering over 909 thousand views in a month.

On August 27th, Reddit user a_criminal11221[6] posted skinned_furby's video to /r/dankvideos titled "Shark POG." The post received over 3.3 thousand upvotes in 29 days. On September 11th, Reddit user Tryrutus[7] posted the video to /r/shitposting, gaining over 1.5 thousand upvotes and 8 awards.

Over the following weeks, users began creating and sharing new versions of Shark Pog across social media platforms. On September 25th, YouTuber memes by cowbelly reuploaded a shark pog meme by Instagram user spicy.weetbix[8] (shown below).
