Shawn Mendes' In Lyle, Lyle Crocodile refers to Canadian singer Shawn Mendes voicing a singing crocodile in the animated film Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile. The film gained virality in September 2022 as people roasted the musician with memes, and later in February 2023, when the movie was released on the streaming platform Netflix, TikTok users posted reaction videos mocking scenes from the movie where the animal appears singing in Shawn Mendez's voice.

Origin

The CGI musical comedy Lyle, Lyle Crocodile[1] was released in theaters on October 2nd, 2022, directed by Will Speck and Josh Gordon. The movie, following a singing crocodile, is an adaptation of the children's story of the same name.[2] On June 2nd, 2022, the first teaser of the film, which features the Canadian singer Shawn Mendes voicing the singing crocodile, was uploaded to YouTube[3] by the channel Sony Pictures Entertainment. received 13 million plays and 20,000 likes in seven months (seen below).

As more trailers and teasers of the film were being released in late 2022, memes started to sprout on social media, roasting Mendes's decision to voice the singing crocodile. Twitter[4] user @filmlamet shared a video showing the singer alongside the CGI crocodile on September 10th, 2022, garnering 2.5 million plays and 168,500 likes in six months (seen below).

On February 4th, 2023, the movie was released on Netflix, causing renewed interest in memes about the singer's performance in the movie. Memes especially involved the first scene the crocodile appears singing, as TikTok[5] user @al1210murphy_ showed on February 6th, 2023. His video (below, left) received 2.6 million plays and 764,700 likes in a week. The creator posted another clip from the movie a day later, garnering 1.6 million plays and 344,300 likes in a week (below, right).

…where's the funny part? Why are people laughing themselves to tears over this? Is a singing CGI crocodile in a family film too unrealistic to accept?
