About

The Simpsons "Drive A Car Like This" Gag or Black Guys Drive A Car Like This But White Guys Drive A Car Like This refers to a reaction image and image macro meme inspired by a scene from The Simpsons episode "Homer and Apu" in which a Black comedian does a stand-up bit where he leans back and says, "Black guys drive a car like this, yeah, but white guys, see, they drive a car like this," while crouching forward. The joke inspired a meme that comments on superficial observational humor and jokes about perceived differences where none actually exist.

Origin

The "Drive a car like this" gag appears in The Simpsons season 5, episode 13, titled "Homer and Apu," which aired on February 10th, 1994. In the episode, Homer watches a Black stand-up comedian joke about how white people drive carefully, while Black people drive relaxed and reclined, mimicking exaggerated swerving.

The clip was reposted to YouTube[1] by the channel T on September 12th, 2013, where it gathered over 1 million views in 12 years.

Comedian: Yo, check this out. Black guys drive a car like this…

[leans back while miming holding a steering wheel, and does a baritone scat. Audience laughs]

Comedian: Yeah, but white guys, see, they drive a car like this…

[leans forward while miming holding the wheel, and does the scat with a nasally voice. Audience laughs]
