Mematic is a meme generator application that allows users to produce various image macros. These memes generally feature a watermark that reads "Made With Mematic," which has become the subject of parody.

History

In February 2012, the iOS app Mematic launched. About three years later, in December 2015, the app was made available for Android users.

Features

Mematic is a meme generator application, working similarly to others, offering various images and GIFs that users can add captions to. First, users choose a style of image macro, which include "Free Style," top and bottom text, Demotivational Posters, tweets, Breaking News and more.

Next, users can either upload a photo from their phone's camera roll or choose a photograph from the gallery provided by the application. They then add text, which they can position and stylize in a variety of ways. More options are available in the pro available pro version (screenshots below).[2]

Made With Mematic

When producing a meme using the free version Mematic, the app includes a watermark that reads "Made With Mematic." If users generate a meme in the pro version, there is no watermark. The phrase became a catchphrase, which meme creators used to mock the popularity and prevalence of the application. For example, on February 11th, 2019, Redditor [3] NetFelix25 post Gru's Plan that referenced the phrase (shown below, left).

Over time, memers began to parody the watermark, turning it into a phrasal template that users the form "Made with X." On March 10th, Redditor[4] maestrul_dumelor posted an image of SpongeBob SquarePants meme with the watermark "Made with visible frustration." The post received more than 23,000 points (95% upvoted) and 275 comments in less than one month (shown below, center).

About two weeks later, on May 23rd, Redditor[5] adong7 posted a Detective Pikachu meme with the watermark "made with depression." Within 24 hours, the post received more than 11,000 points (97% upvoted) and 50 comments (shown below, right).
