Reductress is an American feminist satire media company, primarily known for their comedic news articles that parody women's media. Similar to The Onion, Reductress lampoons news media through articles and podcasts.

History

In 2013, comedians Beth Newell and Sarah Pappalardo launched Reductress "to take on the outdated perspectives and condescending tone of popular women’s media."^[1] On March 14th, 2013, one of the earliest posts entitled "Stay-at-Home Mom Has Not Left Her House in 16 Years."

On October 25th, 2016, Reductress released its first book, How to Win at Feminism: The Definitive Guide to Having It All And Then Some!.^[3]

On June 13th, 2018, it was reported that Comedy Central ordered a late-night television show pilot produced by Reductress.^[4]

Features

The site mainly focuses on articles, lists and galleries centered around women's issues. It's also designed to match the aesthetics of women's magazines, such as Cosmopolitan.

Additionally, the site has sections for merchandise, podcasts, a calendar of events and workshops for writing comedy and satire that are taken in person.

Rape Culture Frontpage

In August 2016, the site dediated its entire front page to jokes about rape and sexual assault, particularly satarizing rape culture within the comedy community. In a comment to Jezebel,^[2] Newell wrote:

"Our female comedian friends were feeling pretty frustrated with a lot of the dialogue surrounding these events, specifically some of the comments coming from men. We put out a call to writers for pitches on the topics of sexual assault and related issues and we received an overwhelming response.

"So we came up with the idea to use as many of those ideas as possible and do a full homepage takeover."
