About
Smash Brawl Announcer / Shitty Wii Remote Speaker refers to a phrasal template on Twitter / X in which a person imagines an unexpected character in Super Smash Brothers Brawl. After the character is selected and announced by the game's announcer, the character will say a catchphrase through the Nintendo Wii remote speaker, which was a feature of Brawl. The parodies send up how these catchphrases usually sounded poor due to the quality of the Wii remote speakers.
Origin
In Super Smash Brothers Brawl for the Nintendo Wii, the game had a feature in which, after a character was selected and announced by the game's announcer, the character would say a catchphrase through the Wii remote speaker. On February 9th, 2008, YouTuber Wiitachi uploaded a video demonstrating the feature (shown below).
On January 31st, 2021, Twitter user @MatttGFX[2] posted the first parody of the feature, using Luigi's catchphrase. The tweet gained over 670 retweets and 7,000 likes in three years (shown below).
Spread
Parodies featuring unlikely Smash characters didn't begin appearing until over a year later. The first was posted on March 20th, 2022, Twitter user @UsagiCola[1] posted a written parody imagining that if Austin Powers was in Brawl, his catchphrase "Oh behave!" would be mangled by the Wii remote speaker. The tweet gained over 8,900 retweets and 55,000 likes in two years (shown below).
The trend continued with various other characters over the following weeks and months. On July 3rd, 2022, @MatttGFX[3] did a version with Columbo, gaining over 530 retweets and 3,100 likes in eighteen months (shown below, left). On December 25th, 2023, Twitter user @thelicoricekid[4] inspired a resurgence of the meme by posting a version based on the Christmas film It's a Wonderful Life, gaining over 850 retweets and 5,800 likes in one week (shown below, right).
