About
Stop Killing Alligators to Make Gatorade refers to a hoax featuring a photoshopped image of a protestor with a sign edited to read "Stop Killing Alligators to Make Gatoraid" (sic). The image was shared by some conservatives online attempting to mock liberals and was covered by Snopes.
Origin
The photoshopped image first appeared online on March 5th, 2018. It was posted to Imgur by user gutkhababa,[1] where it gained over 3,700 upvotes (shown below, left). The original image was taken at a strike in London in 2011, and read "I'm really not happy about this"[2] (shown below, right).
Spread
The following day, another, more clearly photoshopped edit appeared on the side (shown below).
Both photoshops began spreading on Twitter shortly after when they were shared by conservative users who thought they were sincere, and used the photoshops to mock liberals (examples shown below).
The spread of the hoax led it to being covered by Snopes[2] on March 30th. The topic was also covered in a thread on /r/OutOfTheLoop[3] on March 24th. The phrase has been repeated on Twitter as a joke copypasta in the months since (examples shown below).
