A Young Woman's Political Record is a fanfiction inspired by Youjo Senki, also known as The Saga of Tanya the Evil. Posted on SpaceBattles from 2018 to 2020, it became well known both within the Youjo Senki fandom and a prominent part of SpaceBattles' culture, spawning waves of recursive artwork and fanfiction.

History

Youjo Senki was originally a web novel published in 2010 by Carlo Zen before being adapted to the light novel format in 2013, a manga in 2016, and an anime in 2017. It is an Isekai story in which a Japanese salaryman, following their murder, is reincarnated as a girl in a fantasy version of early twentieth-century Germany. Recognizing the similarities between her new home and the First World War, the story chronicles her attempts to avoid the dangers of military life.

jacobk was a fairly well-established fanfiction author by 2018, having written fanfiction about Naruto, Harry Potter, and Worm fandoms since at least 2011. On July 18th, 2018, he posted the first chapter of A Young Woman's Political Record^[1] on SpaceBattles. Over the following two years, a total of fifty-seven chapters were posted, totaling approximately 310 thousand words.

The premise of A Young Woman's Political Record is as follows:

Following the Germanian Empire's defeat and collapse into several smaller states, a teenage Tanya Degurechaff enters politics out of a simple desire to earn a simple living. Much to their dismay, they become a prominent figure in Germanian politics.

Online Presence

A Young Woman's Political Record became a notable piece of fanfiction within the subculture in the years after it was published. As of 2024, the original SpaceBattles thread for A Young Woman's Political Record has over 7 million views on SpaceBattles, making it the fourth most-viewed piece of fiction on the website. Additionally, the fanfiction.net^[3] version of the story is the most favorited and followed Youjo Senki story on that website. The story also has a dedicated page on TV Tropes.^[2]

The fanfiction quickly inspired fan art celebrating it within the Youjo Senki fandom. For example, one of the earliest known fan art works was posted in the original SpaceBattles thread^[4] on July 15th, 2018 by user nohat.

On October 22nd, 2020, SpaceBattles^[6] user rewinderon posted their interpretation of one of the chapters from the fanfiction as a manga (title page shown below).

On June 6th, 2023, Redditor DracNT posted a compilation of fan art to the /r/YoujoSenki subreddit,^[5] gaining over 440 points in one year (example shown below).
