Overview
Bear5 is a character and Friday Night Funkin' mod and parody of Five Nights at Freddy's that features a rap battle against a blue-tinted version of Freddy Fazbear known as Bear5. The mod, released in February 2023, was created by kiwiquest and SNAP!! and inspired by X user and artist sponglebog1 in November 2022. It became the subject of memes, including video edits and fan art, over the following months on sites including Reddit and TikTok.
Background
On November 22nd, 2022, X[8] user @sponglebog1 posted a photoshop of a blue tinted Freddy Fazbear gripping a character with Luigi's face, writing, "No way, Bear 5 on the Sonar CD!" garnering roughly 170 likes in nine months (shown below).
On February 3rd, 2023, kiwiquest published a Friday Night Funkin' mod to GameBanana[1] titled Bear5. The mod, a parody of Five Nights at Freddy's, features a rap battle set to a song titled "death" where a blue-tinted Freddy Fazbear known as Bear5 battles against a green-tinted Foxy. The mod was downloaded over 2,600 times in six months. On February 5th, YouTuber[2] Flippy posted a playthrough of the mod, garnering over 36,000 views in six months (shown below).
Online Presence
The game became increasingly popular throughout 2023, inspiring memes, fan art and fan games. On March 10th, 2023, Redditor u/DiRel_BlueJi posted a piece of Bear5 fan art to /r/fivenightsatfreddys,[3] garnering over 130 upvotes in five months (shown below).
Vs. Bear5 Retake
On June 12th, 2023, GameBanana[4] Friday Night Funkin' mod team U_Sauu posted a mod inspired by Bear5 titled Vs. Bear5 – Retake, garnering over 6,400 downloads in two months. On June 13th, YouTuber[5] CommunityGame posted a playthrough of the mod, garnering over 300,000 views in two months (shown below).
TikTok Memes
Absurd memes and shitposts became increasingly popular on TikTok starting around July 2023. For example, on July 29th, 2023, TikToker[6] @bear_5_ posted a Bear5 shitpost, garnering over 196,000 views in a week (shown below, left). On July 30th, TikToker[7] @b_e_a_r_5 posted a video of Bear5 screaming, garnering over 500,000 views in a week (shown below, right).
