Friday Night Funkin' Mods are fan-made add-ons and modifications for the rhythm game Friday Night Funkin' (FNF), including reskins, modified "Weeks," new antagonists, songs and more. FNF has a massive modding community and is one of the most popular categories on mod sharing site Game Banana with over 2,000 available mods for download as of June 2021.

Origin

The idea to mod FNF was first shared by Twitter^[13] user @wizcarras on November 6th, 2020, who posted a modified screenshot of the game showing a clown character facing off against the game's protagonist Boyfriend (shown below). The creator of FNF, Ninja Muffin, replied to the post saying, "real image???" to which Wizcarras replied, "I wish." With no download ever released, this is not technically the first mod, however.

On November 10th, Twitter^[14] user @ECarterSterling showed off footage of a mod they'd been working on adding Parrapa the Rapper to the game (shown below).

On November 25th, YouTuber^[15] "Thoughtful Child?" posted a video showing a mod adding Parrapa as the protagonist, replacing Boyfriend (shown below). This is the first known mod with a download link.

Carol & Carol V2

On December 14th, 2020, Game Banana^[1] modder bbpanzu released an FNF mod that replaces Girlfriend with a new character called Carol, a Black woman who performs the same actions as Girlfriend. The mod received over 13,000 downloads in five months (shown below).

On February 15th, 2021, bbpanzu and GENOX released "Carol V2,"^[2] a full-week mod adding Carol as an antagonist (shown below). The mod was downloaded over 210,000 times in three months.

Vs. Whitty

On February 1st, 2021, Game Banana^[3] modder KadeDeveloper released the "V.S. Whitty" Full Week mod, adding three new songs against a new protagonist named "Whitty" to the game. Whitty is depicted as a humanoid in a hoodie with a bomb for a head. The mod is notable for its high quality, including cutscenes between each song, and its high difficulty, often considered one of the hardest FNF mods (seen below).

The mod was downloaded over 2.1 million times in three months, becoming one of the most popular for the game. Whitty's popularity has made him the subject of numerous fan animations and pieces of art (examples shown below).^[4][5]

Whitty is often shipped with fellow mod character Carol, a relationship that is often depicted in fan content. For example, on April 9th, 2021, YouTuber Kiffy uploaded a fan animation depicting Whitty and Carol falling in love, garnering over 9.6 million views in a month (shown below).

Everywhere At The End Of Funk

Everywhere At The End Of Funk is a modification by Pierogii & Birdbonanza that was posted to Game Banana^[17] on March 12th, 2021. The mod is based on and set to the album Everywhere At The End Of Time, notable for exploring themes of dementia and how it destroys the mind. The mod plays off these themes, depicting Boyfriend suffering from dementia, slowly losing his mind throughout the mod (shown below).

The mod is one of the most highly regarded for its sadness and high quality. It was the subject of criticism shortly after its release when users began flooding Instagram's hashtag "#dementia" with images of Boyfriend (example shown below).

Hatsune Miku Mod

On March 13th, 2021, Game Banana^[6] users Genox and evdial posted a full-week mod adding virtual popstar Hatsune Miku as an antagonist, along with four original tracks (shown below). The mod was downloaded over 842,000 times in two months.

The Tricky Mod

On March 16th, 2021, Game Banana^[7] user Banbuds posted a full week-mod adding the Madness Combat character Tricky the Clown as an antagonist (shown below). The mod has since become one of the most popular for its high quality, garnering over 1.2 million downloads in two months.

The popularity of the mod increased Tricky and the Madness series' popularity in general, resulting in Tricky being the subject of a large amount of fan art and media (example shown below).

Smoke 'Em Out Struggle Vs. Garcello

On May 3rd, 2021, modder atsuover posted a full-week mod for FNF to Game Banana^[8] featuring three stages set to original songs against a new character named Garcello, a heavy smoker shrouded in shadows who tries to peer pressure Boyfriend and Girlfriend into smoking a strange cigarette. That same day, YouTuber Gegcoin posted a video showcasing the mod, garnering over 3.8 million views in a week (shown below). The mod was heavily praised for its high quality in animation and songs.

Garcello quickly became a fan-favorite character, resulting in numerous works of fan art depicting him (examples from Twitter^[9][10] shown below).

On May 6th, Redditor u/SugarRatio posted an original animation to /r/FridayNightFunkin^[11] and Twitter^[12] of Garcello lip-dubbing to the Stop Posting About Among Us video, garnering over 2,900 upvotes in five days. The tweet gained over 1,400 likes and 390 retweets in the same span of time (shown below).

Sarvente's Mid-Fight Masses

On March 18th, 2021, modders Dokki.doodlez, Mike Geno and kuroao_anomal released "Sarvente's Mid-Fight Masses," a full-week modification for FNF featuring a female nun character named "Sarvente." The mod has been downloaded from Game Banana^[18] over 1.7 million times as of June 2021, making it one of the most popular FNF mods (shown below).

Sarvente has since become one of the most popular fan characters, inspiring numerous fan animations and pieces of art (examples shown below).

"Vs. Matt" Mod

On April 5th, 2021, modder Sulayre released the "Vs. Matt" mod on Game Banana.^[19] The full week mod (shown below) includes five new stages against Matt, a Nintendo Mii featured in Wii Sports who became the subject of memes in 2018 about being OP. As of June 21, 2021, the mod has been downloaded over 494,000 times. The songs in the mod include, "Light it Up," "Ruckus," "Target Practice," "Sporting," and "Boxing Match."

The mod became massively popular among FNF fans, receiving considerable fan art and discussion online. On May 28th, 2021, Twitter^[20] user @SrNibb posted, "Thinking how many kids are going to grow up thinking Matt is from FNF and not Wii Sports," garnering over 3,800 likes in a month. On June 16th, Redditor u/YeetSkDeet and u/meshary-rady posted memes about Matt to /r/FridayNightFunkin,^[21][22] garnering over 2,200 and 2,800 upvotes in roughly five days (shown below, left and right).

The Matt mod is separated into a number of "Wiik's", a portmanteau of "Wii" and "week."

"Vs. Sky" Mod

On April 8th, 2021, FNF modder bbpanzu posted the "Vs. Sky" mod, a full-week modification for the game adding three new stages against a crazed 19-year-old fan of Boyfriend known as "Sky" (shown below). Sky was created by 14-year-old TikToker and Twitter user @bfswifeforever before the mod.

The mod and character became popularized in the following months, inspiring numerous pieces of fan art and content (shown below). The mod is no longer available and was removed following a raid by trolls of @bfswifeforever's Discord server with NSFW art depicting Sky.

"Vs. Tabi Ex Boyfriend" Mod

On May 16th, 2021, the "V.S. TABI Ex Boyfriend" mod, created by modder Homskiy, was posted to Game Banana^[23]. The full week mod sees Boyfriend battle against a character named Tabi, the ex-boyfriend of Girlfriend. The mod features fully voice acted cutscenes and is notable for its high quality. It features the tracks "My Battle," "Last Chance," and "Genocide." The mod gained over 521,000 downloads in a month.

The mod inspired controversy between its creator Homskiy and Whitty mod creator sock.clip, as the latter accused the former of stealing their sprite's idle animations. This eventually lead to sock.clip retiring from the modding community.

Community Drama

Sky Mod Drama

Following the release of the "Vs. Sky" mod, fans of the modification began creating fan art and content about the character, including rule 34 artwork. According to the character's creator @bfswifeforever, Sky is 19-years-old, similar in age to the other characters in the game. However, when bbpanzu released the mod, he stated that Sky is 12, making the NSFW artwork controversial. When trolls learned that @bfswifeforever was 14 years old, they began raiding her Discord server with NSFW images of Sky, leading to the deletion of the mod from Game Banana for the creator's safety.

On April 22nd, YouTuber^[16] "spete" posted a video explaining the drama in full detail (shown below).

Bbpanzu commented on the video in May, saying, "i claimed sky was 12 because i assumed the creator and they were the same age. it was revealed days later that Sky (the character) was 19 and bfswifeforever was 13."

"Vs. Whitty 2" Canceled

In late May 2021, FNF fans began accusing modder Homskiy of stealing the idle animation of Whitty, made by sock.clip, for their character Tabi, after sock.clip made note of the similarities on an Instagram Live stream. This inspired users to harass Homisky. Sock.clip later cleared up the rumors, stating Homskiy did not steal the animation, and left the FNF modding community, canceling the "Vs. Whitty 2" mod. Homisky posted a video to YouTube on June 7th talking about the situation (shown below).
