Overview
CATLY is a upcoming multiplayer game created by SuperAuthenti headed by Kevin Yeung. The game was announced at the 2024 Game Awards, promoted as a "AAA" game and slated for release on PC, Nintendo Switch and Apple Watch. The game incited controversy online in December 2024 for it's AI-generated artwork, and for displaying a lack of transparency about the creators, studio and developers backing the project.
History
On December 12th, 2024, the Game Awards posted a trailer for a game called "CATLY" to X (formerly Twitter),[2] showing several different kids of cats interacting with each other in a dream-like environment. The video gathered over 3,000 likes and 1.2 milion plays in a day.
The trailer was also posted to IGN's YouTube,[1] where it gathered over 140,000 views.
The description on the post read, "Here's a first look at Catly in this reveal trailer for the upcoming interactive open-world adventure game starring beautiful and hyper-realistic cats. Catly will be available on Steam, Nintendo Switch, and Apple Watch in 2025. Catly is a love letter to cats, made for cat lovers by cat lovers. Every encounter celebrates cat mannerisms that showcase cats’ playfulness, grace, coziness, and of course, mischief."
Streamers Pokimane and Ninja promoted the game on their X[3][4] accounts on December 12th, with Pokimane later writing, "i had no idea, thanks for letting me know – sadly i found out too late but i’ll 100% look out for this when promoting games in the future :/"
The game was reportedly made by SuperAuthenti, headed by Hong Kong based developer Kevin Yeung and Shaghai-based social media manager Wency Chao.[5]
Online Reactions
Several internet users posted negative reactions to the project, criticizing The Game Awards, IGN, and various creators for promoting what a game with entirely AI-generated graphics. Several internet users also accused the industry players of promoting a crypto/NFT scam masquerading as an "AAA Cat MMO" title.
On December 12th, 2024, X[6] user @Zetta_330 quoted a tweet from CATLY's official X account, writing, "a "AAA" game with seemingly no names behind it, no information, seemingly AI generated cats, no gameplay or details but coming to PC, Switch, and… Apple Watch?" The post gathered over 60,000 likes in a day.
Also on December 12th, X[7] user @NotPeashyBee posted a thread delving into the company behind CATLY, identifying Kevin Yeung as the driving force behind SuperAuthenti and its projects.
On December 12th, X[8] user @shinyycatherine posted screenshots from the game's Steam page, writing, "Hi! What does any of this mean," and gathering over 25,000 likes in a day.
On December 13th, X[9] user @berdyaboi posted a screenshot of the game's Steam[10] description, which reads, " A Cat Open World, with Beautiful Cats. Hyperrealism, Actions, Cuddle, Speed, Islands, Fashion, Dreams, Snow, Robots, Plants -- all with and via Cats."
