Flute Guy is the nickname given to renowned Venezuelan flutist and composer Pedro Eustache, best known in meme circles for his flute performances at The Game Awards each year. A video of "Flute Guy" enthusiastically playing his instrument as part of a live orchestra rendition of the Xenoblade 3 went viral in 2022, prompting video game enthusiasts to rally behind him and hype up his subsequent appearances at the Game Awards in 2023 and 2024. Eustache notably became the subject of numerous memes and viral reactions in the 2020s.

History

Pedro Eustache began his musical education in Venezuela, studying under his brother Michel Eustache, as well as Ernesto Santini, Antonio José Naranjo and Glenn Egner. During this time, he was a member of the Venezuelan Youth National Orchestra. After completing his studies in Venezuela, he was awarded a scholarship by the Venezuelan government to continue his education in Europe. He attended the Hector Berlioz Conservatoire and L'Ècole de Musique d'Asnières, studying with Raymond Guiot and Pierre-Yves Artaud before pursuing advanced studies with Aurèle Nicolet in Basel, Switzerland. Additionally, Eustache holds a Master of Fine Arts in jazz from the California Institute of the Arts in the United States.[9]

Eustache has also worked on a number of film scores during his career as a musician, including Steven Spielberg's Munich, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, The Body, Kung Fu Panda and Dune Part One and Two.[10]

A video of Pedro Eustache excitedly playing the flute during an orchestra rendition of the Xenoblade 3 soundtrack at the 2022 Game Awards event went viral on December 9th, 2022, leading him to be dubbed "Flute Guy" by many online. YouTuber[1] Ratatoskr posted a clip of Pedro's performance to YouTube, gathering over 500,000 views in two years.

On December 9th, 2022, Pedro Eustache posted a video to Twitter[2] / X thanking people for appreciating his work at the 2022 Game Awards in a post that gathered over 90,000 likes in two years.

The Game Awards began involving Pedro in promotional campaigns for the ceremony in the following year after his virality online. On November 30th, 2023, Pedro posted a video to X / Twitter[3] about his upcoming performance at The Game Awards, gathering over 12,000 likes in a year.

YouTuber Ratatoskr posted a clip of Flute Guy's performance to YouTube[4] on December 7th, 2023, titled, "Flute Guy Goes Hard Again." The video gathered over 120,000 views in a year.

Also on December 7th, Geoff Keighley tweeted,[5] "Omg flute guy," later posting a photo with Pedro to The Game Awards' official Instagram[6] page, gathering over 15,000 likes on both posts.

Flute Guy performed at the 2024 edition of The Game Awards as well, this time wielding a double flute, among other woodwind instruments. X[7] user @winton_foulds posted a picture of Pedro holding his two flutes, gathering over 50,000 likes in three days.
