About
Cookie's Bustle: Nazo no Bombo World is an obscure point-and-click adventure game developed by a small company called Rodik, Inc and was only released in Japan on March 18th, 1999. In early 2023, the game received major attention after an anonymous person attempted to erase it from the internet.
History
Cookie's Bustle was developed and published by Rodik Inc. in 1999.[1] The game stars Cookie Blair, a five-year-old girl from New Jersey who thinks she is a teddy bear. She must win a gold medal by participating in a sports competition in Dero City. Dero City is run by aliens, who prior to the beginning of the game crash landed in Bombo World and were offered the northern portion of the fictional country by its president in exchange for their technology. The game is notable for its use of dark comedy, absurd humor and difficult puzzles to solve.
Investigation
On December 14th, 2022, Twitter user @patbytes[2] made a tweet revealing that an anonymous person has been copyright-claiming various YouTube videos of the game under various names like Ukie, GRACEWARE and NINTENDO (shown below, left). Ten days later, the same user[3] tweeted four more screenshots, showing that this person (under the alias Brandon White) filed multiple claims against the Internet Archive, resulting in the entire section of Obscure Japanese Games being removed, only to be recovered sans Cookie's Bustle (shown below, right).
On January 19th, 2023, @patbytes[4] discovered that GRACEWARE is a non-existent street that may be a front for a company based in Andorra la Vella called GESTORIA GESTA. The user noted that Andorras is infamously known for its use as a tax haven. It is also revealed that Cookie's Bustle was originally in the hands of the collector until it accidentally got leaked online a few years ago.
On January 22nd, 2023, Vinny of Vinesauce fame streamed the game on Twitch, drawing more attention to the game (shown below). Thanks to this, many people are now trying to archive the game in many ways while avoiding legal troubles with "Brandon White."
On January 29th, 2023, @patbytes uploaded the video on his Youtube account that details the history behind it.
