About

Deadpool & Wolverine, sometimes called Deadpool 3 is an upcoming 2024 movie featuring the Ryan Reynolds version of Deadpool and Wade Wilson with it being set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Following a teaser trailer in late September 2022, early hype and memes about the movie focused around the inclusion of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine within the film as his introduction into the MCU.

Origin

The film, previously in flux as it was originally part of the Fox Studios sandbox before their acquisition by Disney, was finally confirmed as being in development and taking place within the MCU by Kevin Feige, leading to a lot of speculation as to what the film's plot and selling point would be. Historically, each Deadpool movie introduced one or more fan-favorite characters from the comic series, with Deadpool 1 starring Deadpool and Deadpool 2 having the character Cable and Domino added to the mix.

On September 27th, 2022, the answer was given in the form of a YouTube video uploaded to Ryan Reynolds's channel[1] labeled "Deadpool Update" (shown below). In the teaser, it was revealed that Hugh Jackman would reprise his role as Wolverine from X-Men when he casually walked in the frame, was asked if he wanted to play the character one more time, then answered, "Sure." The video received over 12 million views in three days.

Spread

The initial shock of having Hugh Jackman reprise his role as Wolverine in the movie was enough to create a lot of hype surrounding the film, which led the original video to get over 1.2 million views in one day, but it was the following day that truly ignited a firestorm.

On September 28th, 2022, Ryan's YouTube[2] channel uploaded another video, titled "Deadpool Update, Part Hugh" in which Ryan and Hugh are sitting on a couch going over the most obvious question regarding the continuity of the character, gaining over 7.1 million views in one day (shown below).

The videos, and what they meant within the context of having the two characters appear in a film together, quickly sparked a rush of memes online. For example, many of such memes were posted on the /r/MarvelMemes subreddit, with a focus on the interaction between Ryan and Hugh and how the fanbase loved both actors. This can be seen in the meme uploaded by Redditor SignificantMushroom5[3] on September 28th, 2022, which gained over 600 upvotes in one day (shown below).

I'm surprised there isn't more discussion about the movie here now that it came out.

NGL I was ignoring it for the most part, didn't see the trailers and expected it to be a trainwreck given the writers strike in middle of production. I just wasn't excited it.

Then it came and some of the reviewers I follow were talking positively about it, so I went to see it with some friends qnd HOLY GODS

I won't go into spoilers but unlike the Dr.Strange sequel this one does reserve the "Multiverse of Madness" subtitle.

Needless to say that I enjoyed it.
