About

Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma is an anime and manga series centered around cooking. The series follows a boy, Sōma Yukihira, who enters an elite cooking academy from which only 1% of students graduate. Yukihara trains to rise in the ranks of the academy in an effort to become a part of the "Elite Ten" of the school. The series has been released in weekly installments in Weekly Shōnen Jump starting in November of 2012. An anime began in April of 2015 and has run for three seasons. The series is also notable for its fanservice, showing the characters in sexually compromising positions.

History

Manga

The series began as a manga written by Yūto Tsukuda and illustrated by Shun Saeki.[1] It is a shonen manga, meaning its demographic is younger men. It premiered in a one-shot in an April 2012 issue of Weekly Shonen Jump and began being released weekly in November of 2012. The first complete volume of the series was published April 4th, 2013. As of April 25th, 2018, the series has 28 volumes.

Anime

An anime adaptation of the manga was announced in October of 2014 by Shueisha (trailer shown below). It was directed by Yoshitomo Yonetani at J.C.Staff with Shogo Yasukawa as the series scriptwriter. The series began being streamed on Crunchyroll on April 3rd, 2015.



The second season of the anime ran from July 2nd, 2016 and September 24th, 2016, and the third ran from October 4th, 2017 and December 20th, 2017. Season 4 was announced for Spring 2018.[7]

Additionally, a video game about the series was released on Nintendo 3DS on December 17th, 2015 (gameplay shown below). A mobile game was released on August 17th, 2015.



Reception

Both the anime and manga have been very well-received online. The manga was rated number 12 in the Kono Manga ga Sugoi! Top 20 Manga for Male Readers survey and was number three in the Nationwide Bookstore Employees' Recommended Comics of 2014. The anime series has a rating of 8.5/10 on MyAnimeList[2] from over 351,000 users. Episodes 15-24 were favorably reviewed by AnimeNewsNetwork.[3] It has a rating of 8.3/10 on IMDb.[4] The show was reviewed by YouTube channel Mother's Basement on November 10th, 2017.

Online Presence

The series has a devoted Wikia[5] page and a subreddit[6] with over 25,000 subscribers. The show has also generated fan art and jokes online.
