Initial Release (Version 1.0)
Geometry dash was officially released on August 2, 2013 for iOS and Android and contained the following levels: Stereo Madness, Back on Track, Polargiest, Dry Out, Base After Base and Cant Let Go.
Growth, subculture and massive gaming community
Over the years, the game has risen significantly in popularity, and is widely considered a serious game, rather than the original concept of a simple mobile game. It is available on steam for PC gamers, which played a part in it's success. Currently, it has almost 250 million downloads worldwide. This is mostly due to it's accessibility, fun and simple one-touch gameplay, and most of all, the level editor and online levels. Players can design their own levels and upload them for others to play. As of 2020, there are over 61 million user-created levels. These levels can be rated, or featured by RobTop himself, giving them a star value, and/or a spot in the featured section. From its release, up to today, the complexity of the game has increased greatly, releasing features such as new gamemodes, in-depth decorations, and custom music through newgrounds.com. In recent years, there have been dedicated geometry dash youtubers and streamers, such as ViPriN, GD Colon, Juniper, and many more. RobTop has promoted many of these active gamers to in-game moderators, whose job is to watch over the game, and suggest levels to be featured.Due to its popularity, massive community, and intuitive level designing, RobTop has been expanding the game greatly, with features like currencies, daily levels, gauntlets, and many secrets. There is an official discord server, which currently has over 50,000 members.
Update 2.2 (Released on the 20th December, 2023)
On January 16, 2017, the game was updated to 2.1, the 11th major update. Since June 2020, the span between 2.1 and 2.2's development has been longer than the one between 1.0 and 2.1. There have been multiple previews and teasers for the update since late 2017, showing the new features coming upon its release. There will be a new gamemode, reverse switches, camera triggers, and much more. There was much speculation behind the massive update, with many gamers frustrated by the long wait. There have also been many rumors about the release date, some of them being random, and some of them derived from hints, like connections to September 20th, 2019 (Storm Area 51), all of them being false. On the 20th December 2023, RobTop released the update, announcing it with the phrase 'check steam', which quickly reached the top trends of Twitter.
The update had been in development for over 6 years.
