About
God of War: Ragnarök (colloquially known as God of War 5) is the 2022 sequel in the God of War video game franchise, scheduled to be released worldwide on November 9th, 2022, for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles. Developed by Santa Monica Studios and directed by Eric Williams, the game marks the second entry of the more dramatic tonal shift in the franchise, after the God of War (2018) reboot, following main character Kratos further evolves his relationship with his now teenage son Atreus. The game will serve as the finale to the Norse mythology era of the series, covering the events of Ragnarök that bring about the end of days, and depicts the deaths of some of the Norse gods.
History
God of War: Ragnarök was first announced at the PlayStation 5 Showcase[1] event on September 16th, 2020, with a teaser stating that "Ragnarök is coming," in reference to the events at the end of the previous game. Uploaded by IGN's YouTube[1] channel, the teaser(see below) has garnered 6.6 million views and 226,000 likes in two years.
The game was scheduled to be released in 2021, but the studio behind the game, Santa Monica Studios, delayed it to 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Christopher Judge's[2] (Kratos's voice actor) health problems. The sequel is scheduled to be released worldwide on November 9th, 2022, for the PS 4 and PS 5 consoles.
Gameplay
God of War: Ragnarök is a single-player, third-person action-adventure video game, following the same features of the previous entry, with an over-the-shoulder free/continuous camera and RPG elements. In this new game, you battle Norse mythological creatures such as the God of war, Kratos, and his son, Atreus, trying to avoid the end of the world known as Ragnarök. The game also features increased enemy types and more mini-bosses to give the game more variety.[3]
Sony revealed the gameplay for the game during its September 13th, 2022 State of Play. The YouTube[6] video (seen below) has garnered 6.6 million views and 346,000 likes in three months.
Reception
Like the 2018 reboot, which was well received by critics, Ragnarök has been getting relatively universal acclaim on review aggregator Metacritic[4]. As of November 4th, 2022, it ranked with a 94/100 score based on 117 critic reviews. In November 2022, Ragnarök ranked as the second Best PlayStation 5 Game of 2022, behind only FromSoftware's Elden Ring.
