Letter Choice Wordplay Memes are video meme templates in which two opposing forces are often given a letter or root word via object labeling, with the two forces seeming to fight over which one will combine with a central word or letters to create the punchline. This meme format is most often seen using the Thor vs. Kratos fight in God of War: Ragnarok in which he throws his axe, but it's often used with other scenes from the game as well.

Origin

The game God of War: Ragnarok came out on November 9th, 2022, with the characters Kratos and Thor already being prevalent in memes before launch. It took 11 days for the first memes from the game to start, with TikToker itsapxllo^[1] uploading one of the first instances of the "word choice" meme, featuring footage of Kratos and Thor coming to a standstill in their fight while their weapons, with the letters "P" and "W" trying to combine with the word "enis" (shown below).

Spread

The meme concept of creating a humorous battle of letters to create a word quickly began to spread, with other parts of GoW Ragnarok being used in this format across a range of different attempted words. On November 25th, 2022, TikToker luffyslegion^[2] uploaded a different take on the format, with a scene from later in the game involving Atreus, Heimdall and Thor being used as the backdrop for a meme between "TR" and "B" fighting for the word "IGGER," earning over 150,000 likes in three months (shown below).

On December 1st, 2022, A third variation was posted to TikTok by the creator nicolaspkiemberly,^[3] which used the early game moment of Thor, Kratos, Atreus and Odin in Kratos's house. In this version, the template "_ICK" is used as the caption, with object labeling being used to showcase the difference between Kratos, Thor and Atreus, before Odin comes in (shown below).
