Home Alone Reboot is an upcoming film in the Home Alone film series that restarts the franchise. The film, which is set to premiere on the Disney+. The announcement elicited heavy criticism from fans of the film series.
History
On August 7th, 2019, in an earnings call with investors, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that the company would be producing a reboot of Home Alone for the Disney+ streaming service.[1] He said that they would be "reimagining" films from the Fox library, which Disney acquired in 2018. Additionally, the company would be rebooting, among other titles, Home Alone, Night at the Museum and Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
Reception
Following the announcement, people online expressed skepticism about the reboot. Twitter [2] user @SarahO_Connell tweeting, "Disney’s rebooting Home Alone (because of course it is) for its forthcoming Disney+ streaming service. Here’s the most fitting use of Macauley Culkin screaming ever." Within 24 hours, the tweet received more than 1,600 likes and 345 retweets (shown below, left).
Twitter[3] user @CAPTAlNVALKYRlE tweeted a screen capture from the television series It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia with the caption "disney really has the audacity to reboot home alone and night at the museum???" The tweet received more than 11,000 likes and 3,100 retweets in 24 hours (shown below, center).
Throughout the day, people joked about the reboot (example below, right).
Macaulay Culkin's Response
On August 7th, Macaulay Culkin, the star of the original two Home Alone, tweeted a photograph of himself surrounded by food. He captioned the post,[4] "This is what an updated Home Alone would actually look like." Within 24 hours, the tweet received more than 600,000 likes and 108,000 retweets (shown below).
Culkin followed the tweet[5] with a message to Disney: "Hey @Disney, call me!" Within 24 hours, the tweet received more than 59,000 likes and 4,000 retweets (shown below).
