About
In Space With Markiplier is a choose your own adventure web series hosted and created by the YouTuber Markiplier and marketed as a YouTube Originals series. The premise of the videos is similar to A Heist With Markiplier, which saw the same format used for a bank heist, except this time it's about solving your way out of a space station time-loop.
Origin
During the 2021 YouTube Streamy Awards, a promotional teaser was shown for the project, which was later uploaded on December 11th, 2021, to Markiplier's own YouTube Channel[1], where it gained over 2.2 million viewers in four months (shown below).
On March 4th, 2022, the official trailer for the project was posted on Markiplier's YouTube Channel, showing more of the action that is part of the story as well as showing the ship, Invincible, exploding. The trailer[2] received over 11.2 million views in just over a month (shown below).
Spread
Between the teaser and the official trailer, and between the trailer and the final release, memes, fan art, and speculation threads were made about the project at large. On March 4th, 2022, shortly after the trailer aired a meme was submitted to the Markiplier Subreddit by Redditor[3] Sprinkles_GayMerGirl in which the realization sets in that while Markiplier was previously thought to be the Captain, it's really the viewer who is, earning 860 upvotes in one month (shown below).
This trend would continue, with March 14th, 2022 having a meme uploaded to the subreddit by the Redditor ~noregrets[4] which shows Markiplier huddled in a corner looking dejected, with a text caption added that is a reference to the trailer in which Markiplier says he'll lose it if one more thing explodes (shown below).
Release
On April 4th, 2022, the project was finally released on Markiplier's official YouTube channel. The first video[5] in the series, titled In Space With Markiplier: Part 1, received over 3.3 million views in 24 hours and became the #1 trending video for several hours following its release (shown below).
Following the release of the project, Twitter user @NatalieLMoore[6] posted a common picture meme, the out of context spoiler, consisting of four images that don't make any sense out of context, but within the context of the media make perfect sense, and earned 3,000 likes in one day for it (shown below).
Post-Release
On April 18th, 2022, Markiplier uploaded a video using a Zalgo title reading 'PARADOX DETECTED' to his YouTube channel[7], pointing at the website 'IWantYouIn.Space' which would later go defunct. Fans of Markiplier were glad at how the video confirmed and canonized the character Lixian while gaining 1.7 million views in three weeks (shown below).
Sequel
Markiplier continued to upload cryptic videos to his YouTube channel that related back to In Space With Markiplier, until he eventually uploaded a part 2 premiere date that was set for May 2nd at 12 PM Pacific Standard Time. The second part did premiere as expected, and it continues on with the theme of reality unraveling at an uncontrollable pace, while also racking up over 400,000 views in the first two hours of going live[8] (shown below).
