Overview
M3GAN or MΞGAN is a horror film in the killer doll/robot sub-genre written by James Wan, creator of films including Anabelle and The Conjuring. The film follows a roboticist who creates a prototype AI android named M3GAN, a life-like female doll, that is meant to be an ally and protector of its owner but ends up going on a killing spree. The trailer premiered on October 11th, 2022 and gained viral spread, inspiring memes using a scene where M3GAN dances to various songs and is portrayed as a slay queen. The film released on January 6th, 2023.

Trailer Premiere
On October 11th, 2022, the trailer for James Wan's upcoming horror film M3GAN was posted to YouTube and Twitter,[1] garnering over 87,000 views on the former and 1.6 million views on the latter in a day. The movie is about a realistic android doll who is tasked with protecting a young girl, Cady, but ends up going haywire, ultimately killing the people around her (shown below). On the day of the trailer's release, Megan Thee Stallion retweeted[2] the trailer, writing, "Not being biased but I think they made this movie for me," garnering over 28,000 likes in a day.
Twitter Beef With Chucky
On October 12th, 2022, the Twitter[4] brand account for Chucky, @ChuckyIsReal, the serial killer doll from the Child's Play movies, retweeted the trailer for M3GAN, writing, "everybody's tryna be me," garnering over 474,000 likes and 60,000 retweets in two days (shown below, left). That day, M3GAN's brand Twitter commented, "u know u that doll when u cause all this conversation," garnering over 28,000 likes in the same span of time. Later that day, @ChuckyIsReal tweeted[5] another meme about M3GAN, garnering over 5,200 likes in two days (shown below, right).

M3GAN has a branded Twitter[6] account, @meetM3GAN, that tweets as if it is run by the doll.
Memes
Following the trailer's release, people began making memes about the movie and the character M3GAN, some comparing it to Wan's film series Annabelle, also about a killer doll. On October 11th, 2022, Twitter[3] user @jimmyasss posted a video of two girls on TikTok Live arguing immaturely, writing, "annabelle and m3gan," garnering over 19,000 likes and 1.4 million views in a day (shown below).

Trailer Reactions
Numerous reactions to the trailer were uploaded to YouTube and TikTok the day of and following the trailer's release. For example, on October 11th, YouTubers Tyrone Magnus and 3c Films uploaded reactions, garnering over 38,000 and 76,000 views respectively in a day (shown below, left and right).
Reception
M3gan gained largely positive reviews following its release, garnering a 95% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes[7] from 112 professional reviews and a 78% positive audience score from over 100 reviews.
