Megan Thee Stallion, real name Megan Jovon Ruth Pete, is a rapper from San Antonio, Texas, best known online for her songs "WAP" and "Savage" and for starting the Hot Girl Summer meme. She released her first song in 2016 and gained a large online following with subsequent releases, receiving numerous awards for her music and inspiring several viral trends and memes, such as I Can't Talk Right Now, I'm Doing Hot Girl Shit.

Online History

Megan Thee Stallion released her first song, "Like a Stallion," on April 10th, 2016 (shown below, left), releasing her first SoundCloud[1] mixtape Rich Ratchet that same year. The music video for "Like a Stallion" gained over 5 million views in six years. In September 2017, she released her first commercial EP Make It Hot. The music video for a single from the album, "Last Week in HTx," was posted to YouTube on December 24th, 2017, garnering over 9.5 million views in five years (shown below, right).



Megan signed with 1501 Certified Entertainment in 2018.[2] That June, she released the EP Tina Snow, becoming her first album to enter the Billboard Top 100. On February 8th, 2019, the music video for the lead single from the EP, "Big Ole Freak," was posted to YouTube, garnering over 108 million views in three years (shown below).



Hot Girl Summer

On May 15th, 2019, Megan Thee Stallion posted her album art for Fever to Twitter[3] naming herself a "hot girl." The tweet gained over 15,000 likes and 4,400 retweets in two months. On May 18th, 2019, Twitter[4] user @sweetliketeaaa posted a selfie captioning it "I heard it’s a hot girl summer 👀" (show below, left). The tweet gained over 342 likes in two months. Many more Twitter[5] users began posting selfies like @Ohlawditsmeshaa who captioned her photos, "Meg said it’s a hot girl summer. So guess what I’m doing all summer long? Cuttin’ up 😈" (shown below, right). The tweet gained over 300 likes in two months.

On August 19th, Megan released a song called "Hot Girl Summer" in celebration of the meme (shown below). In the following years, the term "hot girl summer" has continued to prove popular, often as a caption on selfies.



"Savage" / Savage Challenge

In March 2020, Megan Thee Stallion released the song "Savage." On April 29th of that year, she released an official Savage remix featuring Beyonce, garnering over 89 million views on YouTube in two years (shown below, left). The month "Savage" was released, it inspired a dance trend on TikTok known as the Savage Challenge (compilation shown below, right).



Tory Lanez Megan Thee Stallion Shooting

On July 12th, 2020, at approximately 4:30 a.m., the Los Angeles police responded to a call about an argument in an SUV where shots were fired. Megan Thee Stallion, Tory Lanez and an unidentified woman were in the car. Police arrested Lanez after discovering a gun in the car, suspecting him of shooting Megan Thee Stallion. They charged him with carrying a concealed weapon in a vehicle, a felony offense.[6] On July 15th, TMZ[7] published footage of the incident, which reportedly shows Megan Thee Stallion limping backward toward police and, according to TMZ, "with each step she takes, she leaves a trail of blood" (shown below). The outlet reports that the three people involved in the incident were wearing swimwear, having left Kylie Jenner's pool party earlier in the evening.



On July 15th, Megan Thee Stallion published a statement on Instagram (now deleted, shown below) about the incident. She wrote, "On Sunday morning, I suffered gunshot wounds, as a result of a crime that was committed against me and done with the intention to physically harm me. I was never arrested, the police officers drove me to the hospital where I underwent surgery to remove the bullets." The post received more than 1.5 million likes in less than 24 hours.

In an interview with Gayle King, Megan said Lanez shot her after an argument. Lanez pleaded not guilty to shooting Megan. The trial is set to commence between November 28th and December 8th, 2022.[8][9]

WAP

On August 7th, 2020, Megan Thee Stallion released the song "WAP", an acronym for "Wet Ass Pussy." The music video, published on YouTube that day (shown below), garnered over 476 million views in two years and the song became one of the most popular of the year, debuting at number one on Billboard's Hot 100 charts and breaking first-week stream records.[10] The music video is notable for its inclusion of Kylie Jenner, inspiring a remix meme.



The song was both celebrated for its sex-positive lyrics and condemned by some conservative pundits, who saw it as inappropriate. On August 18th, Ben Shapiro reacted to the song and music video critically, reading the lyrics in what's now become a viral and oft-memed clip (shown below, left). The song also inspired a WAP dance trend where participants drop to the floor and perform a humping motion (shown below, right).



In September, the lyrics of the song "From The Top, Make It Drop" inspired memes on Twitter where two related images are placed under the first and second halves of the phrase (examples shown below). In September 2022, "WAP" became eligible for diamond status in the U.S.[12]

I Can't Talk Right Now, I'm Doing Hot Girl Shit

In November 2020, TikTokers began using Megan Thee Stallion's song "Girls in the Hood" in a trend called I Can't Talk Right Now, I'm Doing Hot Girl Shit, where they lip dub the title phrase then lip dub to "Girls in the Hood" or show something comedic as the song plays (compilation shown below).



Twerking Cameo In She-Hulk: Attorney at Law

On August 29th, 2022, Twitter[11] account @PopCrave confirmed that Megan would appear in She Hulk: Attorney at Law. On August 30th, the third episode of the series premiered, featuring a scene where Megan twerks with She-Hulk (shown below). The clip gained viral spread online, becoming a meme and point of criticism towards the show for many.



DaBaby Raps About Sleeping With Megan Thee Stallion On "Boogeyman"

On September 23rd, 2022, rapper DaBaby released his album Baby on Baby 2, featuring the song "Boogeyman." In the song, DaBaby raps lyrics claiming he slept with Megan, rapping:

The day before she said that Tory Lanez shot her, I was fuckin' on Megan Thee Stallion
Waited to say that shit on my next album
Hit it the day before too
But I kept it player, I ain't say nothing 'bout it

DaBaby released a music video for the song on September 27th, which features a Megan Thee Stallion lookalike (shown below). The video inspired some backlash for including a Megan lookalike.[13]



G-Eazy Kissing Mehan Thee Stallion Video

G-Eazy Kissing Mehan Thee Stallion Video refers to a February 2nd, 2020 clip from rapper G-Eazy's Instagram where he is seen kissing rapper Megan Thee Stallion on the cheek at a party. The clip sparked rumors the two were dating, as well as disgust at the clip, which was parodied in various ways online. Megan denied the rumors in a tweet (shown below).

Beyoncé Megan Thee Stallion Grammy Win Reaction is a reaction image macro meme featuring Beyoncé and Megan Thee Stallion learning that Beyoncé had tied the number for the most Grammy Award wins by an artist. On March 14th, 2021, rapper Megan Thee Stallion and singer Beyoncé accepted the Best Rap Song at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards on stage. In the image, Beyoncé appears to be shocked, leading many to use it as a reaction image to jokes about shock, disassociation or a lack of concentration.



Megan Knees

Megan Knees is an internet slang term that means you have strong knees. It is a reference to rapper Megan Thee Stallion's knees, which are perceived as strong based on the way she twerks and bounces while deeply bending her knees. The term started to spread online in 2019, inspiring the Megan Knees Challenge on TikTok in 2021, where users attempt to twerk while kneeling like Megan. The trend became popular again in August 2022.

Megan Thee Stallion Pushing is a POV clip of American rapper Megan Thee Stallion pushing the camera away from herself from a music video for her song "Plan B." In August 2022, the clip gained virality as an exploitable meme format when it was combined with clips of various characters flying through the air after getting pushed.

Megan Thee Stallion's Butt In Gamer Boyfriend's Face

Megan Thee Stallion's Butt In Gamer Boyfriend's Face refers to a viral photograph of rapper Megan Thee Stallion with her face on the floor and her back arched upward, her butt in her boyfriend Pardison Fontaine's face as he's gaming, with him ignoring her and continuing to game while holding a controller with his headset on. The photo was posted to Instagram by Megan sometime in September 2022 and later deleted. That month, it then became a viral redraw meme where people replaced the two with various pop culture characters, similar to He Wants to Order.
