About
Made in Abyss (Japanese: メイドインアビス Hepburn: Meido in Abisu) is a manga series written and illustrated by Akihito Tsukushi[1], which was serialized online in Takeshobo's Web Comic Gamma[2] and later adapted into an anime series by Kinema Citrus.[3] The story is set in a world where humanity's last frontier is a great pit known as the Abyss and follows the adventure of Riko, a young girl who finds and befriends a humanoid robot and descends with him into the Abyss in search of her mother.
History
The manga was first serialized on Takeshobo's Web Comic Gamma website in 2012, before the first volume was released in July 31st, 2013. Since then, the series has been compiled into six tankōbon volumes as of July 29th, 2017. Seven Seas Entertainment announced during their panel at Anime Expo 2017 that they had licensed the manga in North America with the first volume being published in January 2, 2018.[4] As of November 2017, six volumes have been released.
An anime adaptation was announced by Kinema Citrus[3] in December 2016. The 13-episode series aired from July 7th to September 29th, 2017, concluding in a one-hour finale.[15]
Reception
As of October 29th, the anime has a score of 8.6 on IMDB[5] and an 8.9 on MyAnimeList[6]. The manga received a score of 9.1 on MyAnimeList and is currently #4 on all-time best manga[7]. As of October 30th, Made In Abyss has an estimated 4-7k in BD sales.
Online Relevance
Ever since the announcement of the anime's release on Akihito Tuski's Twitter, [8] many sub-communities of the anime began to form. A devoted Made In Abyss subreddit, /r/MadeInAbyss[14] was created with currently 3,000 subscribing in the past six months[9]. An official Facebook [10] and Twitter[11] page was created each around the time the anime was announced in November 2016. The Twitter account for Made in Abyss has more than 29,000 followers. The show has also made large impressions on 4chan /a/ board[12] and many artist communities such as Tumblr[13].
