About
Miiverse is a social network operated by Nintendo. It is split into communities for specific franchises, and can be further grouped into specific games. The site was shutdown in 2017.
Origin
On June 3, 2012, Miiverse was announced in a pre-Nintendo Direct event.[1] It was said that it would be a way to communicate with other players of Nintendo games both in and out of game, on your Wii U, PC, 3DS, or mobile device.
On November 18, 2012, Miiverse was launched on the Wii U.
The web-based version of Miiverse was opened on April 25, 2013.[2]
On December 9, 2013, Miiverse was made available on the 3DS family.[3] This update to the 3DS allowed users to use their Nintendo Network ID from the Wii U and share it with the 3DS.
Bad Miiverse Posts
On May 18, 2013, Daniel Switzer created the Twitter feed @BadMiiversePost, sharing amusing posts and images from Miiverse.
The first tweet was "is there any option to enhance the graphics", which was posted on a Miiverse community related to the SNES game Super Mario World. This set off the popularity of the account, and as of June 8, 2014, the feed has over twelve thousand followers.
Criticism over Moderation
The rules on Miiverse are somewhat harsh; for example, you cannot post Friend Codes there (despite people posting them on just about every other related site on the internet). Googling "miiverse ban" shows plenty of results from people who got banned from Miiverse, with the opinion that they were banned unfairly. On December 16, 2013, slipstream created a website, VerseCrypt (link via Wayback Machine) to encrypt messages, with its intended purpose to encrypt things like Friend Codes before posting them on Miiverse so they could "hopefully stay up longer".
