One Piece (Live-Action TV Series) is a television show adapting the manga and anime of the same name created by Eiichiro Oda. The show is produced by Tomorrow Studios for the streaming service Netflix. The series is expected to premiere on August 31st, 2023. The Netflix adaptation received a lot of fan art and was memed on social media as more information about the show was revealed online.

History

The production of a live-action One Piece television series on July 21st, 2017, by Weekly Shonen Jump editor-in-chief Hiroyuki Nakano to commemorate the manga's 20th anniversary.[1] On January 30th, 2020, Netflix announced the show was in development,[2] however, production[3] only started on February 1st, 2022.

On June 6th, 2022, Netflix released a "First Look" video[4] showing the set and location of the series filming (shown below), with the eight-episode expected to debut on August 31st, 2023. The video garnered 4.9 million plays and 133,000 likes in a year.



The official trailer[5] (shown below) of the series was revealed on June 17th, 2023, garnering 5.9 million views and 206 likes in four days.



The series features an ensemble cast with Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy, Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero Gibson as Usopp and Taz Skylar as Sanji.

Online Presence

Fans have been waiting for information about the upcoming series since the 2017 live-action announcement, with a lot of concern regarding the Netflix adaption, as the 2021 live-action TV series of the anime Cowboy Bebop was heavily criticized by critics and the audience. For instance, on January 30th, 2020, Twitter[6] user @Cross_Ultimate posted a meme about the show's live-action adaptation (shown below), which garnered 5,500 likes and 2,000 retweets in three years.



On June 18th, 2023, a video of the cast reacting to the first trailer of the live-action went viral on social media. The show's official Twitter[7] account shared the video (shown below) of the actor's reaction, garnering 13.2 million views and 4,500 likes in three days.
