PC MUSIC

About

PC Music is a record label/artist collective established in London by English electronic musician A. G. Cook in 2013. The label has gained notoriety for their releases due to their pitch-shifted vocals, cyberculture influences, and artist personas, along with the polarizing reception that is received as a result.

History

Musician A. G. Cook began PC Music as a successor to a previous so-called "pseudo-label" he started known as Gamsonite while studying at Goldsmiths, University of London[1], along with the intention of embracing an A&R role[2]. The label put out its first release, "Bobby" by GFOTY (shown below, left) in 2013 and has since not put out a physical single, making most of their releases free downloads until November 2014 with the release of "Every Night" by Hannah Diamond on iTunes. In March 2015, PC Music made its live debut in America with a showcase at SXSW described by Cook as a "rebirth moment" for the label in a BBC Radio 1 interview (shown below, right).

On October 21, 2015, PC Music announced through Facebook a partnership with major record label Columbia Records. The first release from this partnership is an EP from fellow PC Music artist Danny L Harle titled "Broken Flowers" released November 20, 2015[3].

Reception

The label has received polarizing and divisive reception from critics. The Guardian's Sam Wolson described the record label as "contemptuous parody,"[4] whereas Vice's Clive Martin questioned whether or not they were "really the worst thing ever to happen to dance music"[5] and The Atlantic described the label as "gloriously tacky"[6]. On the contrary, the label has received year-end accolades in 2014. The Huffington Post gave PC Music a spot in their "Underrated Albums – 2014" list at number 3[7], while Fact named PC Music the best label of 2014[8].

Online Relevance

PC Music's official Facebook page has garnered over 21,000 likes since its creation[9] while their official Twitter account has garnered over 13,000 followers[10] as of December 2015. A PC Music subreddit created by Redditor a_complete_cock on August 26, 2014 has received 1,125 subscribers[11] while PC Music's official Soundcloud account has received the most growth with over 47,000 followers[12]. The label has also garnered a following on Tumblr[13][14], along with a more polarizing following on 4chan's /mu/ board[15].
