Peep Show is a British television sitcom that ran on Channel 4 from 2003 to 2015. The show was created by Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain and stars David Mitchell, Robert Webb and Olivia Colman. The show follows two roommates named Mark and Jeremy, with most of the show being shot from their points of view, and their inner thoughts serving as narration. This intimate style of writing and presentation has inspired a dedicated fandom and several long-lasting memes.

History

According to the documentary "Peep Show and Tell",^[1] the show was originally conceived as a live-action version of Beavis and Butthead, where the show would consist of people watching TV and talking over it. During production, the show became a more conventional sitcom following the lives of the characters, though it was still shot from their perspectives.

The first episode of Peep Show aired on September 19th, 2003. The show never received high ratings, but engagement and DVD sales were consistent enough that it ran for nine seasons and became Channel 4's longest-running sitcom.^[2] In 2019, an American version of the show was announced, following two female main characters.^[3]

Reception

The series won BAFTA awards in 2008 and 2009. A 2019 article in The Guardian called it one of the 10 best shows of the 21st century.^[4] According to an article in The Guardian, the unusual style gave the show a dedicated fanbase, but prevented it from becoming popular in the mainstream.^[5]

Fandom

The show had an international online fanbase throughout its run, which continues to this day. The show's official Facebook page had over 500,000 likes in 2021. The 2010 documentary "Peep Show and Tell"^[1] interviewed fans from around the world who found the show online.
