About

Ranma 1/2 (Japanese: らんま1/2, Ranma Nibun-no-Ichi) is a Japanese romantic comedy manga series created by Rumiko Takahashi. It centers around Ranma Saotome, a martial artist who fell on a cursed lake during a training trip to China that causes him to change into a female when exposed to hot water (needing cold water to change back), and his arranged fiance, tomboy martial artist Akane Tendo. The manga covers their daily lives and relationships while various characters show up trying to either woo them or defeat them. The manga is well known for the very intricate relationships among its large cast of characters. It's considered to be among the most influential anime and manga properties of the 1990s and would go on to become among the first anime to gain a big following in the United States.[1]

History

Rumiko Takahashi started work on Ranma shortly after ending her previous manga, Urusei Yatsura. The manga started in August 1987 on Weekly Shonen Sunday; it would continue until ending in March 1996.[2] An anime adaptation by Studio DEEN would start airing on April 15, 1998, which would prove to be extremely popular. It would quickly overtake the manga, resulting in some differences in plot from the manga. It would end on September 25, 1992. Studio DEEN would also create two feature films shortly after, and 11 OVAs[3] a live-action adaptation would also be made in 2012. On June 26, 2024, a new remake series would be announced, this time produced by Studio MAPPA. It would premiere on October 6, 2024.[4]

Fandom

Since its inception, Ranma has gained a big following of fans, and this has resulted in it becoming a common subject of fan art. The intricate relationships amongst its cast of characters have also become the subject of many fan fictions.[5]
