About

Scream Go Hero is a mobile video game in which users control character with their voice, primarily by speaking into their device's microphone with a raised voice. The louder one yells at their device, the higher the character jumps. Additionally, fluctuating the volume and sustain of one's voice will allow them to control the speed of the character's ascent and descent.

Online History

On March 7th, 2017, Ketchapp released the first version of Scream Go Hero for Apple's iOS mobile operating system.[1] The following day, the game was released the Android mobile operating system.[2]

Predecessor

In March 2017, a video game entitled Eighth Note went viral. The game mechanics were very similar to Scream Go Hero, as well as Flappy Bird in that users would scream at their phone in order to make the character move. On February 28th, 2017, Facebook user thejingproductions posted a video of the game, which received more than 6.6 million views, 100,000 reactions 38,000 comments and 120,000 shares (shown below).



Reception

As of March 2019, the video game has received a 3.8 rating (based on 769 reviews). Additionally, that month it became the #1 Action game on the Apple App Store.

In March 2019, the game went viral as people began posting videos of themselves playing the game by shouting at their phone. On March 14th, 2019, Twitter user @marissa_jaleaaa posted a video of her playing the game. The post received more than 145,000 retweets and 394,000 likes in four days (shown below).


Two days later, singer Lizzo sang her song "Juice" into the game. She posted a video of the game on Twitter with the caption "I did scream go hero to Juice like y’all requested." The post received more than 8,500 retweets and 32,000 likes in two days (shown below).

Several media outlets covered the game play videos, including Newsweek,[3] Mashable, [4] PopBuzz[5] and more.


Throughout the next few days, people contunued to upload videos of themselves playing the game (examples below). These videos primarily show off the gameplay and mechanics of the game, featuring a person screaming and the ninja character moving on the screen as a result. On March 14th, YouTuber DashieGames posted a video on the game, receiveing more than 350,000 views in four days (shown below, right).
