SpongeBob Xbox refers to a custom Xbox Series X console that looks like SpongeBob Squarepants. The Xbox was made as the prize for a giveaway contest in promotion of the video game Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, requiring entrants to retweet a post announcing the Xbox variant with the hashtag "#XboxAllStarBrawlsweepstakes" between October 11th and 24th, 2021. The Xbox became the subject of memes after being announced and was noted for its similarities to previous Xbox Series X parodies that emerged in December 2019.

History

On October 11th, 2021, the Xbox Twitter^[1] account announced a giveaway contest in the promotion of Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl. The potential prizes are a custom Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Xbox Series X resembling Leonardo and a SpongeBob SquarePants Series X resembling SpongeBob, particularly the scene from the show in which he mimics a marble block (shown below). The post reads: "Follow and RT with #XboxAllStarBrawlsweepstakes for a chance to win one of these vibrant @NickBrawlGame Xbox Series X consoles." The post gained over 64,000 retweets, 60,000 quote-retweets and 80,500 likes in less than 24 hours.

Shortly after the contest tweet, Xbox tweeted^[6] a How It Started vs. How It's Going meme about the SpongeBob Xbox, gaining over 117,000 likes and 12,000 retweets in a day (shown below). The meme was shared on Instagram^[7] by fazeclan, gaining over 200,000 likes in under 24 hours.

Reactions

The SpongeBob Xbox became the subject of memes quickly after being posted, the first wave in the comments section of the original tweet. Twitter^[2][3] users @RmY2410 and @its_menieb (shown below) commented memes using a photoshopped Tom from Tom and Jerry Xbox Series X, originally posted to /r/XboxSeriesX,^[4] gaining over 1,800 likes and 3,800 likes respectively in less than 24 hours.

Some commenters noticed that the SpongeBob Xbox has a left hand on the right side of the body, which many assumed to be a mistake. However, some commenters refuted that in SpongeBob canon, SpongeBob has two left hands based on season one, episode 19b of the show titled "Neptune's Spatula,"^[5] where SpongeBob reveals that he has two left hands. This is the only scene in the series where his hands both appear as lefties.

Twitter user @shoopdahoop25 commented "i just realized you could be playing on the spongebob xbox sitting in the spongebob chair playing with the spongebob controller (i'm sure you could find a way to use the gamecube controller adapter with the Series X)" posting images of each piece of SpongeBob related merchandise mentioned, gaining over 2,000 likes in under 24 hours (shown below).
