Start Survey?

Overview

Start Survey? is a short horror video game released on itch.io in 2019 that later inspired several Roblox experiences in 2021. The game has players take a survey on a computer that asks questions, sometimes revealing information about the player like their name and location by accessing basic information on their PC.

History

On November 15th, 2019, itch.io^[1] user PixelDough published their game Start Survey? for the Haunted PS1's Horrifying Halloween jam. They posted a trailer for the game to YouTube^[2] on November 16th, garnering over 837,000 views in just over three years (shown below).

Spread

Start Survey? became notably popularized following its release, particularly in Let's Play videos. On November 28th, 2019, YouTuber Markiplier posted a video playing the game, garnering over 4.4 million views in just over three years (shown below, left). On December 5th, YouTuber SSSniperwolf also posted a video, garnering over 31 million views in a similar span of time (shown below, right).

Online Presence

Start Survey Roblox

The game has inspired several games on Roblox since it debuted in late 2019. On January 3rd, 2021, Daxua Studio published a game to Roblox^[3] titled The Survey, garnering over 37 million visits in two years. On May 5th, Roblox^[4]user DevChams posted a version of the game and on August 22nd, 2022, Roblox^[5] user antvvnio published a game inspired by Start Survey? gaining over 14 million visits in seven months. The games then went viral following their release. For example, on April 3rd, 2022, the Live Speedy YouTube^[6] page posted a clip of iShowSpeed playing the game, garnering over 7.5 million views in a year (shown below).

The games became popularized on TikTok in early 2023 as it continued to spread. On February 1st and 3rd, 2023, TikTokers^[7][8] @robloxs..demon and @i.luvurmoney. posted videos playing the game, garnering over 1.4 million and 5.5 million views in a month (shown below, left and right).
