About
Subverse is an upcoming adult RPG video game developed by Studio FOW, an animated adult content production studio. Following a successful Kickstarter project launched in 2019, Subverse was released in early access on Steam in March 2021.
History
On March 23rd, 2019, Source Filmmaker adult content production studio Studio FOW launched a Kickstarter[1] project for Subverse, an adult RPG video game featuring detailed scenes of sex set in a distant hostile galaxy in which a tyrannical government suppresses lewd acts and people.
The Kickstarter project achieved overwhelming success as the project received over $2 million in funding, compared to its $190,000 original goal.[2] On March 23th, 2019, a cinematic trailer for the game was released (shown below).[3]
Speculated Lawsuit
On April 13th, 2019, journalist and YouTuber Tim Pool, who owned a YouTube news and commentary channel called Subverse with nearly 100,000 subscribers and the website Subverse.net, posted a video[4] titled "Studio FOW 'Subverse' Has Forced Me To Retain A Lawyer Over My Trademark Of The Same Name." In the video (shown below), Pool expressed his frustration with Subverse overshadowing the online presence of his brand and stated that he has retained a lawyer.
In a statement to OneAngryGamer,[5] Pool clarified that, at that time, he had not filed a lawsuit against Studio FOW and retained a lawyer in order to communicate with the studio who were unwilling to maintain dialogue otherwise. Pool later renamed his channel to SCNR.
Early Access Release
On March 26th, 2021, Subverse was released in early access on Steam.[7] That same day, a launch trailer for the game was released (shown below).[6]
Gameplay and Setting
Subverse is an RPG space game set in the Prodigium Galaxy, a distant galaxy in the universe ruled by the Imperium. The player assumes the role of the captain of the Mary Celeste spaceship as he and his crew set off on a quest of overthrowing the Imperium.
The game combines elements of RPG, shoot 'em up and turn-based combat. Subverse heavily features animated adult content, with the player being able to engage in sexual contact with his female crewmates.
Reception
The early release version of the game was met with positive response from audiences. On Steam,[7] the game received nearly 5,000 user reviews in four days, achieving a "very positive" average rating with 87% positive reviews.
