About

Subverse is an upcoming adult RPG video game developed by Studio FOW, an animated adult content production studio. Following a successful Kickstarter project launched in 2019, Subverse was released in early access on Steam in March 2021.

History

On March 23rd, 2019, Source Filmmaker adult content production studio Studio FOW launched a Kickstarter[1] project for Subverse, an adult RPG video game featuring detailed scenes of sex set in a distant hostile galaxy in which a tyrannical government suppresses lewd acts and people.

The Kickstarter project achieved overwhelming success as the project received over $2 million in funding, compared to its $190,000 original goal.[2] On March 23th, 2019, a cinematic trailer for the game was released (shown below).[3]

Speculated Lawsuit

On April 13th, 2019, journalist and YouTuber Tim Pool, who owned a YouTube news and commentary channel called Subverse with nearly 100,000 subscribers and the website Subverse.net, posted a video[4] titled "Studio FOW 'Subverse' Has Forced Me To Retain A Lawyer Over My Trademark Of The Same Name." In the video (shown below), Pool expressed his frustration with Subverse overshadowing the online presence of his brand and stated that he has retained a lawyer.

In a statement to OneAngryGamer,[5] Pool clarified that, at that time, he had not filed a lawsuit against Studio FOW and retained a lawyer in order to communicate with the studio who were unwilling to maintain dialogue otherwise. Pool later renamed his channel to SCNR.

Early Access Release

On March 26th, 2021, Subverse was released in early access on Steam.[7] That same day, a launch trailer for the game was released (shown below).[6]

Gameplay and Setting

Subverse is an RPG space game set in the Prodigium Galaxy, a distant galaxy in the universe ruled by the Imperium. The player assumes the role of the captain of the Mary Celeste spaceship as he and his crew set off on a quest of overthrowing the Imperium.

The game combines elements of RPG, shoot 'em up and turn-based combat. Subverse heavily features animated adult content, with the player being able to engage in sexual contact with his female crewmates.

Don't worry, Captain. There will be something to j------- to as soon as you complete the mission and return to the Mary Celeste. Reception

The early release version of the game was met with positive response from audiences. On Steam,[7] the game received nearly 5,000 user reviews in four days, achieving a "very positive" average rating with 87% positive reviews.

Fandom

Subverse's cast of female characters has been a subject of fan art and of NSFW fan art in particular (examples shown below).

They should have just called it Mass Erect, I'm sure no one would sue them for that name.

But really, they seem to be super embracing the cheesy porn parody tone, they should have gone with a cheesy porn parody name.

  • Gone - 5 years ago

If they have to, all they really need to do is change the name. This is really a very common occurrence.

Case in point, Team Cherry had to change their then-upcoming "Gods and Glory" DLC to "Godmaster", a name they liked better in the end.

Personally, I'm not interested in this project myself but I'll let the free market determine whether or not it's a viable product.

The .net has a view count. I went to check one of the articles to compare it to the youtube channel, and I was the second guy to read it. Said article came out a week after the youtube video and has the video at the start. The start date of the Youtube and his stated start date in the article are also identical.

So no, it is certainly a youtube account with a .net add on.

So is that lawsuit going to be pointless if "Subverse" isn't trademarked yet? Would be coincidental naming, but who gives a shit about it. Yeah, name changes can be bullshit if it's for the most stupid reasons (i.e. Anthem was named BEYOND until the last minute before the first trailer), but I understand if that name IS trademarked before (), doesn't really fit (Star Wars Episode VI), or like I said earlier where there's another property that already took that name or sounded similar (That's how the first two Star Fox games in Europe was changed).

Yet again, if I were Tim Pool, I should drop it as soon as possible, since this is just pointless.

More so a .net website which uses youtube. Or does that make Buzzfeed a youtube channel, not a website?

The .net has a view count. I went to check one of the articles to compare it to the youtube channel, and I was the second guy to read it. Said article came out a week after the youtube video and has the video at the start. The start date of the Youtube and his stated start date in the article are also identical.

So no, it is certainly a youtube account with a .net add on.

    Tim Pool has no case.

Not only is his brand more associated with "Timcast" rather than "Subverse", he also didn't have his brand registered until like two weeks after Subverse was announced.

Not only that, there is also a Steam web series called Subverse. And there are plenty of other things called "Subverse", too… he never bothered to sue them.

Additionally, "Subverse" is a surprisingly "generic" term. So getting a brand protection for it means you need to truly stand out there. It is the "third person" of "to subvert"… a normal word.

He only was mad because the game showed up first in Google that's it. His ego got hurt.

With brand names it's "first come first serve"… and he came in last. Additionally, with brands you NEED to actively protect them. If he sues StudioFOW he also needs to sue everything else called "Subverse".

(But that's typical for Youtube """"news"""" they are always the victim and anyone is always out to get them even tho they "never did anything wrong" besides being massive cunts and using their YouTube fanbase to hound other people.)

    +20
    • hexcaster - 5 years ago

Tim has not sued them yet and he probably wont.
There is more to this then Tim Pool is butthurt he is not at the top of google searches for the word "Subverse" anymore.
He is a reporter, getting a hold of people and being able to do interviews or gathering information from sources. his grievance comes from people he has been trying to contact looking up Subverse seeing some weeby looking porn game as the number one result and associating it with him. (people are that fucking stupid and it has already been happening).
And the "fans" of both sides are currently harassing the other. Actually because there are way more people interested in porn then centrist leaning news Pool is the one that has been getting dog piled way harder. And even then neither side is "using" their fanbase to attack one another, I don't know about FOW but Pool has already publicly told his camp to not harass Studio FOW.

And from what ive read of Demi's lore the captain might have reprogrammed her to serve him making the cutest waifu a slave bot ugh and mind control/slavery goes with the rest of those tags i hate

    >an adult RPG video game featuring detailed scenes of sex set in a distant hostile galaxy in which a tyrannical government suppresses lewd acts and people.

It's a setting with a literal horny jail.

Since it's going to be a dystopian future with an authoritarian government, there's going to be Secret Sex Police and an underground black-market for pictures of people holding hands.

    This shit sounds absolutely hilarious.

I'm more surprised that people expected quality NSFW from something whose only selling point is its unabashed NSFW-ness. Anyone over the age of 23 should've immediately identified this edgy cringefest as something only horny teenagers and manchildren who worship South Park and Rick and Morty would enjoy. You'd think the excessive swearing would be enough of an indicator

Would be funny if this ended up being a good game with porn in it. But ignoring meme comments and judging by actual reviews it sound really meh right now, even as early access.

I wouldn't be quite that harsh, but it definitely needs work.
