About

Suicide Squad ISEKAI is an anime television series based on the Suicide Squad from DC Comics. The anime premiered in the United States on Max and Hulu in late June 2024 and its plot follows the Isekai sub-genre trope in which a protagonist or group of protagonists gets transported or trapped in another world. Online, the show has inspired fan art, memes and jokes related to the popular villains in the cast, like Harley Quinn and the Joker.

History

On July 3rd, 2023, DC Comics announced an all-new original anime series[1] in collaboration with Warner Bros. Japan and WIT Studio. The trailer (seen below) amassed over 3.9 million views and 209,000 likes in a year.

The series premiered with an initial three-episode launch[2] in the United States on Max and Hulu on June 27th, 2024.

Online Presence

The anime-style design for the Suicide Squad characters sparked a viral debate on the internet in July 2023, especially the Joker's mouth.

For instance, on July 3rd, 2023, X[3] user @SpriteAnim posted a still image focusing on the Joker's face (seen below, left) captioning "What is this," which amassed more than 480 likes in a year. On July 12th, X[4] user @_M_U_M_E_I_ posted fan art of Harley Quinn and Lucy from the Cyberpunk Edgerunners anime (seen below, right), which amassed over 28,000 likes and 4,900 reposts in a year.

Ber htt

After the anime premiere in June 2024, memes and content related to the series was popularized on social media. For example, on June 27th, 2024, X[5] user @EchoesOfBloo posted a clip of the show (seen below) captioning "The Suicide Squad Isekai is a FEVER DREAM." The post received roughly 111,000 views and 2,400 likes in a few hours.

This show might end up being good, but it won't change the fact that DC constantly trying to push Suicide Squad as their "Big Property" above Batman and Superman is fucking lame despite every Suicide Squad project failing (Though James Gunn's Suicide Squad's failure is the result of Covid and probably would've done better if the entire world didn't shut down, and the Harley Quinn show isn't technically a Suicide Squad show.)

Like Marvel tried to make Inhumans a thing, but when there was no hype for the "Two Part Inhumans movie" they turned it into a show on ABC and when it was canceled due to low ratings they didn't desperately try to push Inhumans on us every year, hell if anything their failure just urged Disney to try and get those X-Men rights back by whatever means necessary.
