About

The American Society of Magical Negroes is an upcoming satirical comedy film by Kobi Libii following a story of a young man recruited into a secret society of magical Black people who dedicate their lives to making white people's lives easier. The name of the film references the "Magical Negro" trope in cinema. Following the announcement, in mid-November 2023, the film inspired memes that imagined white people having trouble buying tickets for the film due to its name containing an ethnic slur, most notably Kinoplex Robert memes. The film is expected to premiere in March 2024.

History

On September 15th, 2023, a teaser for satirical comedy The American Society of Magical Negroes premiered on X[1] / Twitter (shown below).

The film, directed by @KobiLibii and produced by Focus Features, follows the story of a man named Aren, portrayed by Justice Smith, as he is recruited into a secret society of magical Black people dedicating their lives to making white people's lives easier (synopsis[2] shown below, left).

In film, "Magical Negro" is a stock supporting character who comes to the aid of white protagonists. Magical Negro characters often possess mystical powers and folksy wisdom (extract shown below).[3][4]

FOCUS FEATURES About the Film The American Society of Magical Negroes is a fresh, satirical comedy about a young man, Aren, who is recruited into a secret society of magical Black people who dedicate their lives to a cause of utmost importance: making white people's lives easier. Magical N---- i Main L Laconic et Quotes Playing With "Hey, this is the Magical N----. Like in the movies, where the black character is just there to help the white guy on his journey. And he mainly speaks in folksy sayings. 'I don't know much about blah blah. They are usually black and/or poor, but may come from another oppressed minority. They step (often clad in a clean, white suit) into the life of the much more privileged (and, in particular, almost always white) central character and, in some way, enrich that central character's life. If the Magical N---- (also known as Magic N---- or Mystical N----) is from a society of Noble Savages, expect an Anvilicious Aesop about the failings of the protagonist's society - which usually leads to the protagonist "Going Native". This could be really fun if they made it a lighthearted romp but also used it to cast aspersions on 'Positive Discrimination.' Pointing out that people doing things like assuming that another culture can answer the question they can't or assuming that the laid back black guy down the road is 'enlightened' or 'wise' isn't REALLY any less prejudicial or condescending than assuming he's lazy and dumb.

I mean, I kinda DOUBT its going to do anything more nuanced than 'fuck whitey', but pointing out that it didn't have to be a stupid idea helps make what we'll eventually get come across as more of a stupid idea.

Not going to lie, that sounds funny. Makes me think of this Community gag:
