About

Suffergram is a subset of FAIL videos depicting unfortunate events or incidents that typically result in someone getting physically injured, accompanied by the metalcore band Heart of a Coward's song "Shade" in the background. Since being coined on YouTube in July 2012, the term "suffergram" has become synonymous with physically brutal or otherwise violent FAIL videos among the Russian and Slavic internet users.

Origin

On July 22nd, 2012, YouTuber Tiggzyy uploaded a video titled "THE ORIGINAL SUFFERGRAM!!! – Heart Of A Coward – Shade," featuring video footage of a man knocking out a woman to the ground with a punch during a street brawl (shown below). The term "suffergram" can be seen as a portmanteau of the English verb "to suffer" and the noun suffix -gram denoting something written or recorded.

Spread

In early September 2012, numerous channels dedicated to curating similar remixes were launched under the hashtag #suffergram on Facebook[4] and Tumblr[1], as well as on the Russian social media sites like VK[2] and Coub.[5] Meanwhile on YouTube, several viral FAIL videos paired with "Shade" were re-uploaded under the title "suffergram," most notably the ones featuring the video footage of Watermelon Headshot and Lake of the Ozarks Boat Crash, both of which have accumulated hundreds of thousands of views over the next three years (shown below).

Between September and October 2012, hundreds of "Suffergram" remixes featuring a wide range of FAIL videos began seeping into YouTube and Coub, with the majority of instances uploaded by fans of heavy metal music in Russian and Slavic-speaking regions. On March 3rd, 2014, YouTuber Никита Π›ΡƒΡˆΠΈΠ½ uploaded a compilation montage of "suffergram" videos, which garnered more than 150,000 views in less than two years (shown below).

As of November 2015, more than 120 "suffergram" YouTube videos have been featured on the official Tumblr blog and the VK channel, respectively, while search queries for the term "suffergram" yields more than 7,000 results on YouTube, over 275 results on Coub and more than 216 results on Instagram.
