Suzume Opens a Door is a memorable scene from the 2022 anime film Suzume in which the main character Suzume Iwato opens a door standing on its own in an abandoned place, witnessing a marvelous sight. Starting in April 2023, the scene gained virality online as a source material for memes, with users replacing the world beyond the door with humorous footage in various video edits.

Origin

On November 11th, 2022, the coming-of-age fantasy adventure anime film Suzume premiered in Japan.^[1] At the beginning of the film, the character Suzume Iware, a 17-year-old high school girl, discovers a door standing on its own in a middle of an abandoned onsen resort. Suzume proceeds to open the door, with a marvelous sight of a field under a beautiful sky appearing behind it (trailer shown below, scene shown at 0:20 mark).

On April 29th, 2023, TikToker^[2] @glitchedbpdkittenz posted a Being Too Honest With Your Therapist meme and edit of the scene, replacing the scenery beyond the door with a padded cell from a psychiatric ward. The post (shown below) received over 6.4 million views and 1.5 million likes in three months.

In the following weeks, more memes replacing the world beyond the door with humorous footage were shared on TikTok. For example, on April 29th, 2023, TikToker^[3] @ventimainfromday1 posted a meme about Honkai Star Rail that received over 275,000 views and 47,500 likes in three months (shown below, left). On April 30th, TikToker^[4] rashid.al_asfar posted a meme that gained over 3,600 views and 520 likes in the same period (shown below, right).

The format maintained international popularity on TikTok in the following months, with versions of the meme in Spanish, Russian and other languages going viral on the app.
