Being Too Honest With Your Therapist refers to a series of memes about the possibility of being committed to a mental institution should one share their true thoughts and feelings with their therapist. Spawned by a viral tweet in 2018, the format, which uses variations of the catchphrase, saw a resurgence on Twitter and TikTok in 2022.

Origin

On March 15th, 2018, Twitter[1] user @sogodly_ posted an image of a woman climbing through a laser maze, captioned, "Trying to be honest with my therapist but not so honest that I get involuntarily hospitalized." The tweet (shown below) gained over 43,200 retweets and 159,000 likes in five years.

On March 16th, 2018, Tumblr[2] user arandomthot posted a screenshot of the tweet, commenting, "this hits home a little to hard." The post received over 114,700 likes and reblogs in five years.

On October 6th, 2021, TikToker[3] milomissingpenis (previously @milo.ptv) uploaded a video of himself wearing a hospital gown and sitting on a bed, captioned, "POV: you were honest with your therapist." The upload (shown below) gained over 7.4 million likes in two years.

On October 7th, 2021, Twitter[4] user @akakaylen posted a screenshot of the tweet, with the post garnering over 22,800 retweets and 227,000 likes in two years.

The video and the tweet prompted the viral spread of the meme on TikTok and Twitter in late 2021 and 2022. For example, on November 11th, 2021, Twitter user @UziFlexi posted a POV meme that was widely circulated online in the following months (original post no longer available; screenshot shown below, left).[5] On March 3rd, Redditor v3rm1n_8 posted a Bad Ending meme that gained over 5,200 upvotes in the /r/depression_memes[6] subreddit in one year (shown below, right).
