About

Sydney Stabbing Milk Crate refers to a plastic milk crate that was used to subdue a man wielding a knife who allegedly killed one woman and injured another in mid-August in Sydney, Australia. After footage of the incident circulated on social media, memes about the use of the milk crate to pin down the suspect widely circulated online.

Origin

On August 13th, 2019, 21-year-old suspect Mert Ney was subdued by a group of brothers while walking through a street in Sydney, Australia while wielding a knife and yelling "Allahu akbar." (shown below). That day, footage of the incident was tweeted by Australian reporter Andrew Denney, in which Ney is shown pinned down on the ground with a chair and milk crate pressed against his head and torso.

Spread

That day, Twitter user @pjk27779[2] tweeted a Distracted Boyfriend meme featuring a milk crate superimposed over the woman in the red dress (shown below, left). Meanwhile, Twitter user @aaron_willcox[4] tweeted an image macro, joking that Americans perform "a citizen's arrest" with a gun while Australians use shopping carts and milk crates (shown below, right).

Meanwhile, Redditor Samusaurus submitted a photoshopped Time cover with the message "In Milk Crate We Trust" to /r/sydney[3] (shown below). The following day, Yahoo [1] published an article titled "Sydney stabbing: #Milkcrate meme praises actions of British brothers as internet mocks US attitudes to gun laws."
