'Terry' originates from a football match between England and Slovenia which was played in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
England footballer John Terry, was caught on camera performing what's known as a 'fish dive' in a lame and poor attempt to block the ball from going into the goal.
Terry decided to throw himself towards the ball, without a care as to whether a boot hit him or not.
From that day, a group was created on Facebook expressing their love for John Terry's claim to fame. Within the first day, hundreds of pictures were uploaded featuring a 'cut & paste Terry' on a different background. One features the famous football headbutt performed by Zenadine Zidane, but replaced by John Terry.
The scenario can now be used to describe someone's sad attempt at defending themselves without thinking of the consequences or what could happen. This can either be expressed by simply replying with 'Terry', or calling somebody a Terry for their attempts.

There is also video footage around, showing the epic fishness of the dive.
