About

/tg/, standing for Traditional Games, is 4chan's dedicated tabletop gaming board. Although not as prolific as /a/ or /v/, /tg/ carries a moderate presence on the rest of 4chan and even the internet at large. Termed "fa/tg/uys," /tg/ regulars have a reputation for a relatively welcoming attitude and a peculiar collective creativity, having produced many projects over the years [1].

History

Before /tg/'s inception, on /b/ there was the tradition of Warhammer Wednesdays. Fans of Warhammer 40,000 (see below) would gather on /b/ to post about the game all at once. This ultimately resulted in WH40k content dominating the board nearly as much as the furries did, with significant conflict between the two. Much of proto-/tg/ drawfaggotry depicted WH40k Space Marines purging furries from the board [2].

moot eventually took notice of this and instated a new board, /tg/, on the 15th of February, 2007 [3]. While initially established primarily as a containment board for the 40k crowd, /tg/ quickly grew in its popularity until it was something of a hub between many different 4chan boards, which it remains today.

Highlights

Warhammer 40,000

Warhammer 40,000 is a collectible tabletop miniatures war game by Games Workshop, initially released as a science fiction spin-off of another war game, Warhammer Fantasy Battle. It is among the most popular miniatures war games on the market today, and is particularly popular among /tg/ regulars. The game is known for its excessively dark and cynical setting, termed grimdark by the fans in reference to its tagline, "In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war." This tone and atmosphere makes the setting the subject of much ridicule, affectionate and otherwise, among /tg/ regulars. The large 40k community on /tg/ has since developed many memes, in-jokes, and characters, including Cultist-chan[4], custom Space Marine chapters, and "HERESY!" [5].

Dungeons & Dragons

Dungeons & Dragons is a fantasy-themed tabletop roleplaying game, and is largely responsible for popularizing the hobby. Originally developed by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson of TSR Hobbies, Inc.[6], the game has undergone many editions and revisions since its original release in 1974, some more popular than others. Which edition is best is a subject of much contention among players, the conflicts over which are termed "edition wars".
