About

The Blair Witch is a legend in Burkittsville, Maryland, commencing with a woman named Elly Kedward who, after being accused of witchcraft, was tried, found guilty, and then banished into the Black Hills Forest[1] where the townspeople left her, hanging from a tree, to succumb to the elements. Although her precise fate was never determined, it is assumed she died from exposure.[2]

History

The pieces of the mystery to the Blair Witch date as far back as the Revolutionary War between the United States and England. In 1785, several children in the township of Blair, Maryland had accused an Irish-born woman named Elly Kedward of witchcraft. She was convicted and banished to the woods in the middle of winter.[3]
