The Poster The Plot refers to posts comparing the poster of a film or television show to the actual plot. The comparisons began on Twitter in April 2020 and typically involved a screenshot of a humorous scene or image referring to a humorous scene representing the plot.
Origin
On April 6th, 2020, Twitter user @eyesvvideshut[2] compared the movie poster for Brokeback Mountain to the plot which was represented as the two main characters kissing (shown below). The tweet garnered over 128,400 likes and 21,700 retweets in three days.
Spread
On April 6th, 2020, Twitter users began using the format to compare the plot and poster of other films and series. Twitter users @ahooel[3] and @BNA93085960[4] posted comparisons which received over 3,400 likes and 300 likes respectively in three days.
The next day, Twitter user @javeighyw[5] compared the Her movie poster to the plot represented by Plankton and Karen of SpongeBob SquarePants (shown below). The tweet gained over 67,900 likes and 10,000 retweets in two days. Mashable[1] published an article on the poster the plot tweets.
