The Thing Is Red, Yellow, Green, Blue Trend or X Is Red, Yellow, Green, Blue is a video editing trend on TikTok where various subjects, often media properties, are labeled as one of four colors, red, yellow, green, or blue, showing scenes that match the given colors as they are presented. The trend is seemingly linked to color synesthesia, which can cause people to link colors with various subjects. It was popularized on TikTok in September 2023 and is often set to the song "Le Monde" by Richard Carter.
Origin
The earliest known example of the trend was posted by TikToker[1] @.xkleener on September 2nd, 2023, in which the user edits footage from Genshin Impact together that matches the color schemes of red, yellow, green and blue, each color switch denoted by a caption that reads, "Genshin Impact is X," X being a color (shown below). The video gained over 1.2 million views in four days.

On September 3rd, 2023, TikToker[2] @an.xedit posted a version of the trend using One Piece footage, garnering over 843,000 views in three days (shown below, left). On September 5th, TikToker[3] @walknilu posted a version of the trend using Studio Ghibli footage, garnering over 1.3 million views in a day (shown below, right). Between September 4th and 6th, three videos from the trend were shared by X[4][5][6] users.
