About
Dave the Barbarian's Homemade Megaphone is a gag featured in the animated show Dave the Barbarian in which the titular character creates a "homemade megaphone," which includes some DIY crafts that are rendered useless by the fact he attached them to an actual megaphone. The scene has been the subject of edits and redraws online, and saw a resurgence alongside the release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, a game that allows players to craft overly complex items to solve simple problems.
Origin
In episode 3A of Dave the Barbarian, "Girlfriend,"[1] first broadcast on January 23rd, 2004, Dave saves the day by constructing a megaphone. This is built up as a gag, for the only relevant material used to build this megaphone is a functional megaphone.
Narrator: Thinking quickly, Dave constructs a homemade megaphone, using only some string, a squirrel, and a megaphone.
This was one of the most popular gags among the fandom, with captioned screenshots of the scene being put online as soon as 2013.
Spread
Artists online have made various edits and redraws of the scene featuring other characters from pop culture. For instance, on September 25th, 2017, Tumblr[2] user Drawendo published a redraw featuring Peridot from Steven Universe, which gained more than 1450 notes in six years (shown below, left). On April 26th, 2018, Reditor[3] TheFlamethr0wer published another redraw featuring the Soldier from Team Fortress 2, which gained over 2,700 points and over 50 comments in five years (shown below, right).
The meme saw a resurgence in 2023 around the release of The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom, as artists were inspired by Link's new Fuse ability that allowed him to craft extravagant tools to solve simple problems. Notable examples on Twitter were posted by SetiSpaghetti[4] on April 28th, 2023 (shown below, left), and by Potterzilla[5] on May 16th (shown below, right). They respectively gained more than 27,600 and 20,100 likes, and more than 5300 retweets each.
