About

This Is My Voice is a series of TikTok parody videos in which people record their voices progressively changing over time. Some have speculated that the trend was initially created in reference to videos in which trans people document the changes in their voice after starting hormone treatments.

Origin

The exact origin of "This Is My Voice" TikTok on TikTok is currently unknown. On December 1st, 2018, YouTuber totallionelml uploaded a video of TikTok user Skye.malfoy performing different voices after watching anime (shown below).

Spread

On December 16th, 2018, YouTuber Akame Hyuna reuploaded a video by TikTok user AlainaHatsune, in which she records her voice changes after watching anime for several weeks (shown below). Within two weeks, the video gained over 218,000 views and 470 comments.

The following day, Twitter user @canicula[1] tweeted that the TikTok videos were transphobic, claiming that the premise mocks "voice change progression videos of trans ppl who’ve started hormones" (shown below).

(lyappy new year @canicula hey the tiktok meme that's any variation of "this is my voice X weeks on [anime, whatever]" sucks and is transphobic at its core and I want to stop seeing it, thank you 12:28 PM 17 Dec 2018 2 Retweets 27 Likes Tweet your reply yappy new year@canicula Dec 17 I had someone ask so if you're not sure why-they're making fun of/referencing voice change progression videos of trans ppl who've started hormones! (usually guys on testosterone) It's is obviously something v big and personal to people and I think it sucks as a meme punchline!

On December 26th, YouTuber Star Boy uploaded a compilation of "This Is My Voice" videos (shown below, left). The following day, a similar compilation was uploaded by YouTuber Really Got It (shown below, right).
