Tunbridge Wells Burglar Drawing refers to a computer-generated police sketch of a burglar from the Kent Police Department in England, which was released in late April 2024. The computer-generated sketch inspired mockery on social media, with some joking about the sketch's likeness to celebrities and others comparing the quality to retro video game graphics, as it became a meme online.
Origin
On April 29th, 2024, @KentPoliceTWell,[1] the Twitter / X account for the Kent County police department in England, released a computer-generated sketch of a suspected burglar. The tweet gained over 3,100 retweets and 5,700 likes in one day (shown below).
Spread
The image struck many on Twitter as humorous, and the tweet attracted over 2,000 quote-tweets from people making jokes about it in one day. Many made jokes about the image looking like video game graphics from retro consoles. For example, on April 29th, 2024, Twitter user @ItsMattsLaw[2] joked, "did he burglarize the Wii bowling alley," gaining over 3,000 retweets and 60,000 likes in one day (shown below, left).
On April 30th, Twitter user @StephenCVGraham[3] joked, "Suspect was last seen guarding a Soviet base in GoldenEye 64," gaining over 490 retweets and 9,900 likes in less than one day (shown below, right).
Others joked about the sketch's likeness to celebrities. For example, on April 30th, 2024, Twitter user @jenntakahashi[4] posted a comparison to Elon Musk, gaining over 60 retweets and 830 likes in less than one day (shown below, left). The same day, user @_lizharvey[5] joked, "Everyones laughing about this but when they arrest pete buttigieg it wont be so funny will it," gaining over 100 likes in a matter of hours (shown below, right).
