Turn It Up is a viral video that features a high schooler from Texas slightly bouncing while stepping off a curb and telling the person filming to turn up the music playing. Following the video's spread in November 2019, the person in the video, wearing a bandana and sunglasses, was mocked and compared to Manny from Diary of a Wimpy Kid. The video inspired video edits and audio parodies on TikTok and YouTube.

Origin

On November 18th, 2019, Twitter user @ja_lenn posted a video of a J. Frank Dobie High School student stepping off a curb and rapping with the caption, "the kids at my school need help " (shown below). The video gained over 86,800 likes and 24,800 retweets in three months.

Spread

On November 19th, 2019, Twitter user @notkg1[2] compared the person in the video to the character Manny from The Diary of a Wimpy Kid (shown below, left). The tweet garnered over 2,600 likes in three months. The next day @janaisukii[3] posted an image of Timon from The Lion King with a bandana and sunglasses (shown below, right).

On November 20th, Twitter user @Julian_Calv replied to @ja_lenn with another video of the person with the caption, "Got to meet the man himself" (shown below). The post garnered over 2,800 likes and 280 retweets in three months. On November 23rd, YouTuber Meme Clips uploaded the video to YouTube[1] and received over 1.1 million views and 21,000 likes in three months.

On December 14th, TikToker @moetheguy posted the video with the caption "Kids when Baby Shark comes on" (shown below, left). The video accumulated over 430,400 likes in two months. On December 17th, TikToker @numberonegibbyfanpage used the audio to create a new video and garnered over 112,900 likes in two months (shown below, center). On January 15th, 2020, TikToker @antosisland uploaded another video of the turn it up kid and gained over 258,900 likes in a month.
