About

Give Me Orange is part of the catchphrase Give Me Orange Give Orange Me Give Eat Orange Me Eat Orange Give Me Eat Orange Give Me You said in sign language by the chimpanzee Nim. It is recognized as the longest phrase communicated by a non-human. The phrase, said in an attempt to be given food, became a meme for its nonsensical nature and length, with the phrase itself being used on TikTok as an audio clip.

Origin

On July 24th, 2017, the YouTube[1] user NPR's Skunk Bear uploaded a segment titled "Can Apes Really 'Talk' To Humans?" which goes over the history of trying to teach Apes how to communicate. It features a chimpanzee named Nim who signed the phrase at the 5:00 mark, making history as a sustained expressive thought, and earning the video over 2.3 million views in six years (shown below).

The phrase began to slowly gain traction in memes, with a DK Rap version being uploaded on August 5th, 2020 by the YouTube[2] user Udge, which only gained 14,000 views in three years, but showed the versatility of the phrase in being able to be used with editing (shown below).

Spread

On September 22nd, 2020, the YouTube[3] user Gabriel Landon uploaded an edited video in which that segment was clipped and artificially lengthened by repeating the middle part, taking a five-second clip and elongating it into eighteen seconds, earning over 8.7 million views in three years (shown below).

On TikTok, the phrase started to be used ironically as something that was truly deep, as seen in a TikTok[4] by coffee_withcreamer that was uploaded on June 28th, 2022, saying that a quote from a Chimpanzee could never make them cry before having the entire phrase edited on top of them crying (shown below).

This has to be the stupidest thing I’ve ever made. Best wishes to Nim Chimpsky!
