Type Timing also known as Type of Timing or On That Type Timing is an internet slang term used to describe the act of having sex. The term was popularized on TikTok throughout 2023, largely by TikToker @quanos2x, but has been used on the app as early as November 2022, often in videos where users act out humping an object along with a comedic caption about being "on that type timing."

Origin

The origins of "type timing" are unclear. One of the earliest known videos to use the phrase was posted by TikToker^[1] @mianicoleddd on October 6th, 2022 (shown below). The video is captioned "what type of timing you on," followed by the caption, "I'm on whatever timing you on," garnering over 24,000 views in 11 months. On April 11th, 2023, HITC^[11] defined the term as meaning "to have sex." The term "type of timing" was first defined on Urban Dictionary^[2] on April 13th, 2023, referencing sex.

Spread

The term became increasingly popular on TikTok throughout 2023. On January 14th, 2023, TikToker^[3] @melixpo posted a video captioned, "when you finally find out what 'type of timing' means," garnering over 401,000 views in eight months. As early as April 2023, now-deleted TikToker^[4] @quanos1 began going viral for his comedy videos where he uses the term "type timing" and acts out humping things, but was deleted on April 15th.^[5] That day, the TikToker^[6][7] began posting type timing content to his second account, @quanos2x (examples shown below).

On June 12th, TikToker^[8] @ylnworld posted a skit using the term that gained over 342,000 views in three months (shown below, left). On July 5th, TikToker^[9] @quanos2x posted a video using the phrase that gained over 3 million views in two months (shown below, right).

On September 10th, TikToker^[10] @bximdelulu posted a video using the term that gained over 885,000 views in two days (shown below).
